Haiti - Politic : Good news on the 23rd Council of Government
On the night of Wednesday, 4 to Thursday, 5 December, the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, chaired its 23rd Council of Government, on the theme of the "revival of agricultural production and food security", which allowed to see the encouraging results achieved by the government as part of its program to boost domestic agricultural production.

According to Thomas Jacques, Minister of Agriculture, a significant increase was observed in the production of maize, yams, vegetables, sweet potatoes and eggs. He took the opportunity to emphasize the improvement of the quality of local condensed milk, known as "lèt A gogo" distributed to approximately 30,000 students in the School Canteen Program of the Ministry of Education.

Moreover, the last report of the National Coordination for Food Security (CNSA) has clearly demonstrated that more than 900,000 Haitians in difficult situation went from severe food insecurity to security and nearly 250,000 others are left permanently of the red zone on the map of food insecurity.

It should be added to the findings of the CNSA those of the Office of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations in Haiti (OCHA), which show a significant decrease in the rate of kidnappings and killings of more than 50% during the year 2013 in Haiti and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), for its part welcomed the drastic decline of 4.5% in the rate of inflation during the same period.

The increase in rice production during the 2012-2013 session is approximately 12,000 metric tons additional "If we compare the clarity of these reports to the definition of food security as a perfect match, combining reports of quantity of food available, of their nutritional quality, the question of access to products and a guarantee of permanence food, this performance proves significant," stressed Garry Mathieu, the Coordinator of the CNSA.

It is undeniable that the gradual resumption of agricultural production is vital to the Haitian economy at a time when the President Martelly and Prime Minister, spare no effort to ensure food sovereignty. In this context, agricultural parks were created and tools have been widely distributed to farmers and farmer associations everywhere across the country.

In order to meet the needs of the population, a three-year agricultural recovery plan was developed that focuses on three main objectives :
s’articule autour de 3 objectifs majeurs :

  • Strengthen and modernize the agricultural sector in order to achieve better local governance (competence and autonomy) ;
  • Assist and promote family farming in order to combat extreme poverty and rural exodus ;
  • Securing the agricultural sector to drain for more public and private investment to agribusiness.

"The results are already so palpable that 19 major foreign agricultural companies plan to invest more than 35 million U.S. dollars in the agro-industrial sector through a public-private partnership," declared Fresnel Dorcin, Secretary of State for crop production.

This increase in domestic production is a direct result of government policy in agriculture. According to the Minister, Thomas Jacques "agriculture contributes up to 25% to the level of gross domestic product (GDP) and 40% of the needs of population for food," also noting that rice production increased by almost 18% over 2013.
