Haiti - Politic : TCI worried about the Haitian illegal immigration
Peter Beckingham, Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) and Donhue Gardiner, Minister of border control, met with the Consul General of Haiti, Karlo Pelissier, to express their concerns about illegal immigration from Haiti.

At the meeting, the authorities of TCI estimated that the Haitian government had not yet implemented the necessary measures to stop the flow of illegal immigrants. They underlined that the costs of these illegal migration, monitoring, operation, care and repatriation of Haitians in their country of origin, exceeds $1.2 million annually, a situation they described as unacceptable for archipelago.

According to official figures, each month, between 100 and 150 Haitians collected at sea are repatriated to their country while others lose their lives...

To this end, they asked the Haitian Government to redouble its efforts to, among others, authenticate documents of Haitian nationals and prevent the apparent prevalence of false or irregular documents...

For their part, TCI seems determined to implement technological means to try to stop this illegal immigration. In this regard, Rufus Ewing, Prime Minister of TCI had recently indicated that his government would study the possibility of introducing in 2014 a program of surveillance drones, with the assistance of the United Kingdom and the governments of the Bahamas.
