Haiti - Politic : More than 100 million gourdes for Cité Soleil
Within the framework of Special Plan for Cité Soleil, Charles Jean Jacques, Minister of Social Affairs and Labour (MAST) outlined a range of actions to promote the creation of jobs for this vulnerable urban zone where focus the biggest pockets of poverty in the West department. From the actions desired by the population and by taking into account budgetary constraints, Minister Jean Jacques, oriented measures of the Ministry for increased development index of Cité Soleil.

List of measures :

  • A literacy campaign will be held at the level of 15 centers 10 classes, which will be installed. Target Population: 3,750 beneficiaries.

  • 2 community nurseries will be built in the short term (48 jobs) Budget 5 million Gourdes.

  • 10 restaurants and 4 Community bakeries are expected to reduce the financial pressure on households in extreme poverty. They will contribute to food security at the commune. These options will provide 5,000 hot meals each day in total, [10 gourdes dish] and bakeries will provide 12,000 breads daily. "Restaurants are also a development center by providing a space for community groups to come together and a rallying point for initiatives such as literacy programs, family planning. It is also a showcase of good practice in the promotion of domestic production," stressed the Minister.

  • Concerning the priority interest of Cité Soleil residents for income generating activities 4 priority actions have been identified: strengthening fishing, increase egg production, support to producers of bananas, milk and goat farming.

  • 200 solar street lights, for illuminating neighborhoods will be installed. Needs in streetlights will be assessed through consultations with organized groups, particularly women's organizations that can identify areas at risk of gender violence. A preliminary estimate has been established with local authorities.

  • 4 cyber centers 25 computers each, will be made ​​available for the town of Cité Soleil. Beneficiaries: 4,000 people.

  • The canal cleaning, St Georges I, II Bas ti Ayiti (de Soleil 4 to Soleil 26), Tecina and Rockefeller will prevent flooding and the spread of waterborne diseases. Budget: 30 million gourdes.

  • A football field will be developed with step and synthetic turf for young people of the town which are considered as a pool of sporting talent. Budget: 18 million gourdes.

  • 1,000 home will be rehabilitated under the Ranje Kay Katye program. One of the areas identified as priority is the Avenue Soleil. Budget: 40 million gourdes.

  • The current conditions of human waste management represent a danger in terms of spread of waterborne diseases. This plan proposes to make a first step in the right direction, with the construction of 50 sanitary blocks of 8 units each. These blocks will be divided into different neighborhoods of Cité Soleil according to the needs. Beneficiaries: 4,000 people. Budget: 18 million gourdes.

  • Strengthening of the Health Centre of Cité Soleil and development of the Square Fierté, which will create 200 jobs. Budget: 22 million gourdes.
