Haiti - Religion : An extraordinary event, a historic day for Haiti
Saturday, on St. Peter's Square in Rome, amid tens of thousands of faithful from the four corners of the world hundreds of Haitians, pilgrims and supporters, come from Haiti, but also the United States, Canada, France and Switzerland were present to acclaim the bishop of Les Cayes, Mgr. Chibly Langlois, the first Cardinal of the history of Haiti "This is an event extraordinary, it's been so long we expected that !" declared Father Serge Chadic, Director of Caritas Haiti and friend of Cardinal Langlois.

At 8:00 am, a long line of people began to enter St. Peter's Basilica, to assist to the creation of new cardinals, lack of space the vast majority remained outside to attend the ceremony (called Consistory) broadcast on giant screens.

At 11:00 am the Argentinean Pope Francis arrived to the sound of the organ. Sitting at the front row, on a simple chair like other cardinals, the presence of Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI has created surprise. Pope Francis came to greet him amid applause from the crowd, before bowing down before the altar.

18 of the 19 new cardinals had taken place in an arc on either side of the altar. Loris Francesco Capovilla, former secretary of Pope John XXIII, appointed Cardinal honorary, unable to move because of his age (98 years).

It was the first consistory of Pope Francis since his election 13 March 2013

In his homily, Pope Francis has called this new promotion but also all the other cardinals present to conduct a real struggle " Jesus did not come to teach a philosophy, an ideology... but rather 'a way', a journey to be undertaken with him, and we learn the way as we go, by walking [...] And this is not easy, or comfortable, because the way that Jesus chooses is the way of the Cross." reminding the new Cardinals how the Church needed them "I will tell you what the Church needs: she needs you, your cooperation, and even more your communion, with me and among yourselves. The Church needs your courage, to proclaim the Gospel at all times, both in season and out of season, and to bear witness to the truth [...] The Church needs your compassion, especially at this time of pain and suffering for so many countries throughout the world. Let us together express our spiritual closeness to the ecclesial communities and to all Christians suffering from discrimination and persecution. We must fight every form of discrimination! The Church needs our prayer for them, that they may be firm in faith and capable of responding to evil with good. And this prayer of ours extends to every man and women suffering injustice on account of their religious convictions."

After his homily, the Pope called each new Cardinals, who came to kneel before him, in turn, to be wearing the purple skull caps and receive from Pope the the cardinal's ring and parchment (legal creation text of Cardinals) assigning them a church in Rome, symbol of their participation in the pastoral mission of the Pope. The Pope blesses each new Cardinals and embraced them warmly.

After the consistory, the cardinal sang the "Pater Noster" (Our Father) before receiving the final blessing of the Holy Father. Then they left the Basilica in procession, under the applause of a crowd cheering.

Afterwards a reception was hosted by the Embassy of Haiti to the Holy See under the patronage of Michel Martelly, President of the Republic in honor of His Eminence, Cardinal Chibly Langlois, was present among other, the First Lady, Sophia Martelly and the members of the delegation that accompanies him in his European tour.
