Haiti - Politic : Media Freedom for a Better Future
Saturday, on the occasion of the World Day of Press Freedom 2014 celebrated this year under the theme of UNESCO "Media Freedom for a Better Future: Shaping the Post-2015 Development Agenda" Rudy Hériveaux, the Minister of Communication and Ambassador of the United States in Haiti, Pamela A. White issued a message to the "4th power".

Excerpts of the message of Ministry of Communication :
"[...] In the world become today a global village, the job of the journalist is considered the backbone of any modern society.

The press today must have integrated an integrated policy approach to ensure inclusive economic and social development that can meet the aspirations of all people. It should stimulate serious debate on major themes already initiated by the administration Martelly-Lamothe such as: education, environment, employment, health, safety, energy and water.

Through our recent history, media freedom, won at the cost of many sacrifices, must continue with more professionalism and ethics.

It is unanimously accepted that since the coming to power of President HE Mr. Michel Joseph Martelly, never the press freedom has been threatened. Evidenced by the favorable position of Haiti in the latest report of Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) [47th of 180 countries in the 2014 edition]

[...] I would like to emphasize that the proper functioning of the press, the fourth power, can play an invaluable role in strengthening the foundations of our young democracy while playing a leading role in the development agenda post-2015.

[...] The Ministry of Communications on behalf of the Government of the Republic would like to salute the memory of all those who fought to bequeath us this great legacy of freedom of the press.

The Ministry of Communication take this opportunity to commend the outstanding work of media owners, associations of journalists and media workers in general in order to consolidate this democratic achievement. [...]

Vive the Freedom of the Press ! Vive an objective Haitian press, independent and responsible! Vive Haiti !"

Excerpts of the message of the Ambassador of the United States in Haiti :
"[...] I want to salute the courage of all journalists and those who work in the media in Haiti who through their work promote democratic values and the rule of law in this country.

[...] On this day, we celebrate the essential work done by journalists who strive on a daily basis to inform and educate their followers despite the risks that they face.

I also want to pay tribute to those Haitian journalists who died valiantly in the pursuit of their work.

The Embassy of the United States, through the Public Affairs office, will continue to contribute to the training of journalists through various seminars both in Haiti and the United States.

A free and independent press is an integral part of a prosperous and democratic Haiti, and we hope that on this World Press Freedom Day those who practice this noble profession recommit to high levels of professionalism and ethics to better serve the Haitian people in their quest for a better future."
