Haiti - Education : Electricity and digital education in 500 rural schools
The Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, Energy and Communication (MTPTEC) will bring electricity and Digital Education in 500 Rural public schools.

Recall that in 2011, the NGO "Haïti Futur" had approached the Ministry of Education to promote new efficient teaching methods and contribute to the formation of a larger number of students in Haiti. The first interactive digital boards were then installed in several primary schools designated by the ministry.

Given the students' interest in this new system, which integrates the digital version of the official school textbooks, French and Creole, the Ministry received a donation of 500 digital boards from the French Government, worth 1.5 million U.S. dollars. Then raised the issue of the needs in electricity to power all these devices.

Present from the beginning of the initiative with the Ministry, the NGO "Électriciens Sans Frontières" (ESF), was able to mobilize its industrial partners in this project, providing much additional energy equipment essential to the project (electrical equipment and photovoltaic panels, an in-kind donation of ESF to the Government of Haiti of nearly 1, 5 million U.S. dollars) for the electrification of 500 rural schools listed by MENFP in the 0 departments of the country, where will be placed these digital technologies.

In order to allow to realize this project, the Ministry of Public Works has decided to collaborate with the MENFP in purchasing additional equipment, the installation of all materials and training teachers to use them. This funding will be around 4 million U.S. dollars for the entire program, has been possible thanks to PRELEN1 project, a grant from the World Bank to the Republic of Haiti, especially for increasing access to energy in rural areas.

Through this extensive project, more than 300,000 students from the first to the third fundamental year will benefit from this new teaching technology and nearly 3,000 teachers will be trained to provide 700 hours of programs per year in each school. Each institution will have its own facility to make digital equipment work, but also have access to electricity for lighting making it possible to open classrooms to evening classes or recreational activities (computer, movie, internet).

The deployment of facilities is planned over a period of 18 months at a speed of 50 schools equipped every 6 weeks. These solar and electrical installations will be performed by Haitian businesses, generating a potential to create 50 new direct jobs.
