Haiti - Flag Day : In Arcahaie, President Martelly addresses the Nation
This Sunday, May 18 in Arcahaie on the occasion of the 211th anniversary of the feast of our bicolor and the University, the President Michel Martelly accompanied by among others the First Lady Sophia Martelly and Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, delivered at the official rostrum, a speech to the Nation on the Place d'Armes (called the Flag Square) in the presence of members of the Government, of Parliament, the judiciary, academia and the diplomatic corps, local authorities and a large crowd.

Excerpt from Speech of President Martelly :
"[...] I take great lessons of the national celebration of 18 May that day there 211 years the patriotism of Catherine Flon sewed together the two bands of our bicolor, a new Nation had been equipped of his emblem, and the same evening of May 18, his emblem would know his baptism of fire, the sacrifice of those who had to defend it argued loud and clear of an entire people to live free and independent.

May 18, learn us that the nation-state of Haiti should be for both men than women, who had devoted themselves to the cause of our emancipation. This date highlights how are unfair the prejudices that held a category of people in lower status, because of its belonging to the female gender.

[...]

It behooves us to give the May 18 its historical dimension, which is to proclaim the birth of a constant search for the fulfillment of men and women throughout this land.

In its 211 years, we must penetrate us with the idea that our emancipatory struggles will reach their true purpose, only when he son and daughters of our Nation will be raised to the dignity of their being by the recognition of parity of their rights .

The other big lesson I draw from this national celebration and commemoration of the day [...] gives to appreciate how in the formation of the Nation, a special place was reserved for the acquisition of knowledge, which only allow the advent of new citizen wanting to live up to its duties and obligations to the community.

I remember in particular this lesson of history and
that's why I make of the widespread education, one of the cardinal axes of commitments to assume towards the Nation.

In this vein, I opened free way to school for millions of children who were excluded because the precariousness of the family means. My school program was extended to the implementation of more than 300 teaching centers located throughout the country and the student youth has my attention through measures to support them financially.

[...]

This is when men and women of our society, will be endowed with the same rights, that they will walk at an equal pace and assured to the conquest of the objectives of progress and development on which will be based the new Haiti that I'm trying to build. We must divorce from all outdated practices that have delayed our path towards this ideal that we aim to achieve and more we will move through the avenues of learning and knowledge, better we will forge the Haitian, new, professionally and psychologically better able to meet the challenges of our upward march towards progress.

We have a intelligent workforce, just waiting to expand its powers of production, working to bring it with a cycle, every day more extended of transformation of the national environment.

The expansion of our intellectual capacity, furthermore it will grow us at the professional level and of know-how, will allow us to better understand the value of the consultation and dialogue in a democracy.

A broader framework of reflection will lead us to better understand and penetrate the motivations of the other so that be reached a favorable consensus to the common advanced, and thus will be built our society of tomorrow in which will be mobilized all the capabilities of the forces of the Nation and where everything and everyone will have at heart to make its contribution to the irreversible development of our community.

Haitian people,

Whenever it is May 18 [...] whenever I hear this flag flying, it reminds us that women like men, those who have and those who do not have, people above and those below, those of Port-au-Prince and those of the province, from cites and hills... that united, who had fought with the same courage and dedication for this victory which gave us a country [...]

18 May 2014 must mobilize us so that we fought, for girls and son of the country walk together, equal equal, so that we do only one force, that we defeat all difficulties that prevent the country from moving forward. We all know already, it is when we are united, we put together, we have the strength, the strength to fight and the strength to win.

I repeat it today forcefully in the rule of law that I work every day to set up, it is for all citizens have the same rights, the same privileges, the same opportunity to access the education, justice, labor, food, care, health [...] to build a society where every child in the land of Haiti, can feel comfortable to live at home in peace in safety and respect of each other [...] I have no doubt that we can come together to plant our flag on the path of progress, democracy and development.

My countrymen,

As May 18 is Flag Day, it is also the feast of the university, it has great significance for us, it means that it is the university youth who is the guardian of the flag. The marriage of our flag with youth, gives us more determination to fight to bring good universities across the country, to give the youth all the training it needs to take responsibility as it should, so that it work to raise Haiti very high, in the same way that our ancestors did when they gave us the flag.

Today, Haiti needs all its citizens gathered at the foot of the flag, to build an intelligent society, which provides services, that invest in the competence, in job creation, to create wealth to give our natural resources more value, to give the economy more powerfor it takes off.

Our flag flies for us all. What is done for Haiti takes off, this is all os us who must do it together, we must all be concerned.

We have the duty today to continue the work that our ancestors had begin making [...] to give the country another image, another direction, building schools, universities, hospitals, housing, roads, install the light, planting trees everywhere [...]

If our ancestors had back before the slave army, today we would not have flag or a country called Haiti.

The flag is there to remind us that we must walk together, because what unites us and makes us move forward is stronger than anything that disunites us and that try to block our roads.

Haitians,

So that we can take the road that our ancestors have traced for us, let's put our forces together to send Haiti very high and that our flag can float even higher. This is what our ancestors archived to do for us, that's what we need to do, for Haiti can find its place with respect among the great nations of the world.

We know that today we are on the right path, even if there are problems we can not yet solve. We know that there are many problems and limited ressources but I'm working, I'm fighting to create the conditions, for the Haiti we all dream become a reality in our lives [...]

Positive change can not be done in the disorder in the conflict... stability and democracy can not be done in Kraze brize, those who promote disorder, are the enemies of democracy, of the people, of the country, they can not do anything other than break what took time and your money to build them.

It is in peace and stability that the private sector and all foreign companies come to invest, create new businesses and jobs, to enable citizens to find ways to take care of him.

Our ancestors went to war, they have already defeated so that we have peace. Today, it is not now that we have to fight between us, without even knowing why. Let's keep the country in peace, let us unite together to walk in the direction of progress and democracy, we are all children of this land, one country, one flag, one people, one mom who is Haiti Chérie that we all love.

Under the flag blue and red, put all your hands with me, next to the people to continue the battle with all our strength, to send more children to school for free, to build more high school, professional centers, more university to train our youth [...]

Let us unite to encourage domestic production, to put agricultural infrastructure to encourage Haitians to develop agricultural businesses, develop new technology [...]

It is in this way that I go, I will continue to move forward with the Haitian people, we go on the road of change, even if they sow obstacle wherever we go, we will not back. We are determined to keep our head up on the change, the rule of law, the permanent dialogue with all sectors, on the Haiti we all dream, democracy and elections.

We will keep your head up, because with the flag, there is nothing and no one that can make us stop working for Haiti and serve the Haitian people.

If we celebrate today the flag with great pride and respect, it is because we have a country. A country is like a family, one must take care of each other, one must help each other in solidarity [...]

We are all Haitians and in the spirit of our flag, we are all one. This power is your power [...]

Do not let anyone use you for their personal interests, open your eyes to not miss the train of change, we have already lost too much time in the chire pit [...] the time has come to take he decision to advance together on the road to democracy and development [...]

Let us apply together our motto, Unity is Strength, vive Haiti, vive our flag.

Happy Flag Day to all Haitians

Happy birthday to all university

Thank you very much."
