Haiti - Quebec : A monument in tribute to Toussaint Louverture
Unveiling this Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at the park of Latin America (parc de l'Amérique-Latine) a statue of the politician and the Haitian General Toussaint Louverture. This bronze monument of artist Gregory Aniocles, 2.5 m high and weighing approximately 500kg was offered to the capital of Quebec by the Haitian Association of Quebec (Association haïtienne de Québec).

Managed by the National Capital Commission of Québec since 1996, Park of Latin America is located in the lower city of Quebec, between the courthouse and the mouth of the river St. Charles. It is currently undergoing a major refurbishment to be completed in 2010 by the illumination of monuments already installed and lighting paths.

"Quebec, for a long time, wove close links with Haiti. Today, we are the host country that chose not less than 95% of Haitian immigrants who settle in Canada", said MP Andre Drolet at the ceremony.

In addition to the deputies Drolet and Dubourg, were present at the event the Minister for the Haitians living abroad and representing of the president of the Republic of Haiti, Mr. Edwin Paraison, the general consul from Haiti to Montreal, Mr. Pierre-Richard Casimir, the honorary consul from Haiti to Quebec, M.Jean-Joseph Moisset, the representative of the Haitian Association of Quebec, Mr. Adrien Chavannes, as well as the president and managing director of the Commission of the national capital of Quebec, Mr. Jacques Langlois.

"It is a distinguished honor for me, as Québécois deputy of Haitian origin, to pay homage to this hero, precursor of the independence of Haiti. I am happy that his memory is recognized and its statue accommodated in the beautiful town of Quebec, official seat of our democratic institutions", said the deputy of Viau.
