Haiti - Agriculture : Special Agricultural Plan in Cité Soleil
Earlier this week, Thomas Jacques, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR), has launched a mobile veterinary clinic (immunization of animals) in the town of Cité Soleil in the localities of Vaudreuil, Barye Fè and Fontaine.

The Minister stated that the special plan of Cité Soleil of the Ministry of Agriculture, will affect among others the livestock, the promotion of banana cultivation, poultry farming, protection of river banks at the level of the commune and aquaculture, with the support of several ministries and coordinated by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

According to the engineer agronomist Arnoux Severin, the Departmental Director of the West, which pilot the plan for MARNDR, thousands of animals, cattle, goats, pigs etc... must be treated and vaccinated in the commune, which has over 23,000 head of cattle. Moreover, he said that through this plan, 150 families will benefit from 300 goats on the basis of a revolving credit where each beneficiary will have to provide two goats to a neighbor at the next calving. Finally he indicated that more than 350 hectares of land will be planted with banana in the commune.

The vaccination campaign concerned the disease anthrax and rabies in livestock, while taking account of the effects of certain transmissible disease to the population, according to what informed the veterinarian Féguy Saint-Phard, who stressed that treatments and vitamins were also injected to animals.

Farmers of the area, the beneficiaries of this program did not fail to praise the plan of the Ministry of Agriculture, however, they urged the authorities to assist them to deal with various cases of cattle theft very common in the commune. The Minister Jacques said take note of this complaint and assured that he will follow up with other state authorities, particularly the Ministry of Justice.
