Haiti - Elections : CEP completed, Max Mathurin new President 22/07/2014 10:03:13 The election of a new bureau at the head of the CEP took place a few hours after installation of four advisers Max Mathurin was elected as the new President of the Council replacing Me Frizto Canton; Jacqueline Patricia Chantale Raymond (Vice-President (Rep. Executive); Pierre Simon Georges(Treasurer Rep Parliament) and Félix Applys (Secretary General, Rep. CSPJ); Margarette Gloria Girault Saint-Louis, Léopold Berlanger, Frizto Canton, Yolette Mengual and Néhémy Joseph (members) Note that this is the first time under the presidency Martelly, that the Council is not headed by a representative of the Executive (after Josué Pierre-Louis, Emmanuel Ménard and Frizto Canton). After the election, the outgoing President Me Frizto Canton, welcomed the election of Max Mathurin, [to which 9 advisers attended] and promised his full cooperation for the realization of good elections. The Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe welcomed the installation of the last 4 members of the CEP and reiterated its commitment to support, within the limits of its powers, the electoral process. Speaking on behalf of the Prime Minister, Mr. Kedlaire Augustine, Spokesman of the Prime Minister expressed hope that the complete installation of CEP enables to unblock the situation, calling the opposition senators to ratify the electoral law. Following this installation, the opposition parties: Fusion of Social Democrats (FUSION), the "Kovansyon Inite Demokratik" (KID) and the Organization of People in Struggle (OPL) affirmed their intention to register and take part in the upcoming elections. However, several political opposition sectors continue to believe that the CEP is not credible enough to hold the next election. Max Mathurin, former president of the CEP from 2005 to 2007 after his election to the Council declared "I can loudly proclaim that the Electoral Council I chaired in October 2005 to December 2007 had achieved good elections in the country [...] This year we will do better by holding free elections, democratic, fair, inclusive [...]" An opinion that is not shared by Charles Henri Baker, President of RESPE Party who had declared in a note as soon the designation of Max Mathurin in June "The party RESPE can not ignore the attempts of many to try to impose in a CEP [...] a character made notorious by its many dishonest and unpatriotic acts when he chaired the CEP in 2005 [...] The 2006 general elections were an opportunity for the internation of Mr. Valdez and consort, the OAS and CEP of Max Mathurin to validate the flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the people during these shameful electionsfor the Haitian nation giving the candidate Préval the Presidency after having validated white votes one hand, and privileging him of a single round to the polls without having had the majority plus one vote, as demanded by the Constitution."
