Haiti - Justice : Towards the revision of the Haitian Penal Code
On Friday, President Michel Martelly, officially opened at Club Indigo in Montrouis, an important forum on the implementation of the penal policy of the Government in the presence: of Me Jean Renel Sanon, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety, Me Anel Alexis Joseph, President of the Court of Cassation, Marie Carmelle Rose Anne Auguste, the Minister Delegate, in Charge of human Rights and the Fight Against Extreme Poverty, Commissioners of the Governments, Deans, Presidents of the various courts and tribunals, representatives of organizations and institutions involved in the penal justice system such as the Programme of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), MINUSTAH, ProJustice, the Unit for Combating Corruption (ULCC) and representatives of civil society; the Head of State welcomed the organization of this assizes aimed at strengthening the rule of law in Haiti, one of the five priorities of his administration.

"The realization of this Forum on Penal Policy of the Government is a political necessity for the State, must update and better coordinate its sectoral public policies," declared President Martelly, while pointing out that this assizes, characterize an effort to systematize the work of the Ministry of Justice with respect to penal thing.

"The transformation and development of the criminal phenomenonn requires us to think and adapt state action to strengthen the legal system and public safety," added the Head of State, who recalled that rebuilding the state requires "more effective action in ensuring the freedoms and fundamental rights of citizens."

For his part, the Minister Sanon, insisted on building a democratic state that will work on "the humanism obliged of our statesmen," a humanism, which according to him will make sensitive to the misery of some, illiteracy of others, the irresponsibility of many "We will not only revise the Penal code for a time, but perhaps for decades to come," the Minister said, before concluding that the penal policy defined at the end of this work "will make the honor of all those who believe in a strong state in democracy and humanist sensibility [...]"
