Haiti - Duvalier : Reaction of Lyonel Trouillot
Death of Baby Doc: "The death of a tiger very pale"

By Lyonel Trouillot

Jean-Claude Duvalier died. In the streets and in homes, the news has not created great excitement. The man seemed barely alive. And, since his return, he settled in the environment like, already a ghost or an anachronism. And while many Haitians expressed regret that the death, which is not a sentence, has come to save him from accountability for lives and goods, our lives, our goods, no one insists on wanting to throw his body to the dogs. The people he did so much suffering knows something that he, and his father before him, had forgotten: death should be natural and peaceful rest.

The Duvaliers killing the living and the dead, have as "enemies only that of the Nation", treated their victims "of stateless" forbade them tombs and funeral. The quiet receiving of the news of the death of Jean-Claude Duvalier proved that people are better than their leaders: Duvalier died, Peace to his soul.

The problem with the soul is that the proof is made only for those who believe. One could substitute the word by "spirit" or "motivation" or "personality". If we wishes to keep it, usually requires, usually you can follow it with epithets. Of the soul one can say for example that Francis of Assisi had good and François Duvalier rather poor, that it is pure and dark.

Besides blood crimes and its great works of prevaricating, Jean-Claude Duvalier left us nothing that would allow us, modest relief, to give him a soul. His most famous phrases stand ridicule. His "pitit tig se tig" and his "ke makak la la pi rèd" no evidence of anything that refers to the idea of a personality. Looks like a bad student forced to recite his lesson in public.

The tragedy of the heir: Elected by his father, he inherited a government and a people as gifts. He accepts it and becomes fully accountable to history. This is an "I" almighty that do not know to say "I". A lack of language that remains in power fourteen years, extends over twenty-five years of exile. It was not until his return - thank you Préval and vive la France ! - that we will really hear his "voice" ask, candid : "What have you done to my country ? "If the behind the candor pointed the audacity, one of the few outputs of his insignificance of this child of sixty years was to reproach us for having broken his toy.

Because, let us not mistake. Toys, we were, and game was his power. That's what we forgot to say to today's real children, how easy it was easy to die of unnatural causes, how the luxury of each spread out shamelessly before the misery of others, how the State it was "me" and My super ministers and My Tonton Macoutes to the status of minors, and My army subservient to My executive, how I could take everything, require all : cars, women and guitars; beaches and buildings, currencies and public property...

And the death of the fallen prince does not preclude to continue to demand accountability to the regime, to those who remain of this minions and sycophants, and thinking, uncompromising, its place in history. The Duvalierism threw the worst on the worst, the jean-claudisme was the remains of what was worse, an empty Mi'kmaq meaning : all together "noiriste " and "mulatriste", technocratic and obscurantist on arbitrary background and of foolish pleasures. The proper of the heirs, when they are in power, often is just limited to know to enjooy of it !

But the man is dead, do not kill him. The question is how the current government will manage his remains. As communicated cries an "authentic Haitian" and suggests a disrespectful nostalgia for the victims of the Duvalier fury, and a principle of resemblance very worrying for our future. Jean-Claude Duvalier died. We did not get justice, the story is well done. That his family and friends mourn him. One must assume that anyone who lived aroused love and friendship at least a few.

All we are asking the current power is not to impose his remains and his passage such as those of a hero, a man of great virtue. It will be better for all the dead. For him we will not be obliged to denounce to each acclamation, but only to the call of duty to remember. For Gasner Raymond, Auguste Thénor... the schoolchildrens of Gonaïves... and so many dead unburied.

That his family forgive me this lapidary judgment. The idea is not to make them offense. Their story with him is not that of the country or the ordinary citizen. We leaves them their own, they leave us ours. For history, the great, just died a former dictator very pale which was only a heir : without however innocent him, let him sit in its insignificance.
