Haiti - Politic : Laurent Lamothe and John Kerry discussed of elections
Thursday, as part of his working day in Washington, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, met with Secretary of State John Kerry, particularly around the issue of elections.

Prior to this private meeting, John Kerry declared "there is work to be done, and particularly, as we know, there is the challenge of completing the task of having local and legislative elections as soon as possible, being able to set the date and hold those elections to complete the task of Haiti’s transition. Unfortunately, that is being blocked now politically. I spoke with President Martelly just the other day about this, and we intend to try to work very closely to move forward. This resistance – the unwillingness to allow the people to be able to have this vote – really challenges the overall growth and development progress of the country. You need to have a fully functioning government. The president has been working very hard, the prime minister working very, very hard, to pull people together to make this happen."

For his part Laurent Lamothe stressed "Haiti has tremendous challenges ahead of it. We have the elections that we have to organize, and like the Secretary said, we’re working very hard to organize those elections as soon as possible. All – everything is ready for the election to take place. We have the financing that’s in place. The electoral council is in place. We have the security plan that’s in place. We’re missing one thing, which is the electoral law, and the electoral law has to be voted by the senate. And at this moment, there is six senators who’ve been sitting on the law for the past 200 days, seven months. So we are working feverishly in a dialogue with different sectors to try to get them to vote that law in order for us to have elections as soon as possible. But if it was up to us, we would have it tomorrow."

During their meeting the American Secretary of State, while commending the efforts of the Government Martelly-Lamothe for the improvement of the living conditions of Haitians, said that the refusal of the Senate to give the country an electoral law was an obstacle to development. He also reiterated "the deep interest of the United States to help Haiti to continue on the path of democracy, economic growth and development."

Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, meanwhile, welcomed the progress, achievements and actions of the government, particularly in the country's reconstruction, relocation and housing for victims of the January 2010. He also mentionned the enormous challenges to be met, including the organization of elections, energy and security and reiterated the full commitment of his government to work in order to ensure the well-being of the population, according to the wishes of President Michel Martelly.

Also that same Thursday, Laurent Lamothe, as part of a large working dinner held at the Embassy of Haiti in Washington, met with ambassadors accredited of member countries of the OAS. This meeting was an opportunity for the Head of Government to express its appreciation to those countries for their participation in the recovery of Haiti and invited them to come and see by themselves the significant progress of the Government in the mechanism of reconstruction.

Prime Minister Lamothe also took the opportunity to inform them of the electoral process, "which is blocked due to the systematic refusal of the six opposition senators to vote on amendments to the electoral law," and reiterated its commitment to continue to work, with President Martelly, so that these elections take place as soon as possible.
