Haiti - Politic : Strong reaction of Lyonel Trouillot to the news
In an editorial article entitled "Graduations, demonstrations, and the Emperor in the trash," the Haitian writer Lyonel Trouillot applauds the ban on graduations in the school system and criticizes the practice of repression of demonstrations and the carnival side of the celebration of the Emperor Dessalines by the Government.

"Graduations, demonstrations, and the Emperor in the trash" by Lyonel Trouillot
"One could think that still exists two or three who know what it means to be minister. We can support such a measure of the Ministry of National Education, find another such hasty or slightly risky, but we feel, once will not hurt that within this government, that this ministry is headed and that one think about it. After all, nothing is wrong in absolute terms, and it must be recognized that among the leaders of this country, some seem to be in their place. Is it necessary to congratulate them ? (In this slump, their actions deserve to be commended.) Or pity them? (Because they enter history in bad company ?)

The decision to halt the annual waste of large sums of money engendered by this symbolic of appearance and self-satisfaction, sometimes amid scam and mediocrity that is pompously called "graduation ceremony" does protects not only from the ridiculousness of some performances and speeches, it reduces expenses of parents, allowing them to put a little aside for the satisfaction of real needs for the education of their children.

It's already unfair that citizens who contribute to the economy of society do not benefit from basic services. Ask them to pay extra for the 'graduation' of a six year old girl who is about to enter the "grande école" is a crime. Because even poor, they will make the effort to find the money for their child is not left out and participate in the show as others. And the 'graduation', so pernicious, has a little substituted to the evaluation. In the eyes of less educated parents, it would (photos, gowns and blah blah blah) demonstrate by the spectacle that the child has learned something.

This is a good measure, and it has the honesty to be formal, clear, assumed.

But, not assumed, undeclared, there is a practice in which the executive engages and fear the worst. I speak to you, the reader, and ask you how many demonstrations were not interrupted by the police force since the presidency of Michel Martelly ? There is always a reason, or there is no official reason, but students, opponents almost always taking gas and sometimes worse.

No authority has the right to prevent people from protesting. I feel some shame when I hear people with whom I have walked the streets of Port-au-Prince in 2003 that when it is Moise X that manifests, there is no harm in banning. I remember the presence of members of the current government in these demonstrations and their demands: freedom of expression and the right to be against.

One government therefore will ban or prevent by dubious maneuvers demonstrations of 'mulatto', another manifestations of 'black', another manifestations of 'bourgeois', another manifestation of the 'poor' ?

Tomorrow, as this power is not eternal, will be banned or will be dispersed under any pretext, demonstrations 'pinks' ? This power is bent to believe it is popular. That it verifies or proves it without using force.

It's blood, our blood, who paid freedom of expression and the exercise of full political rights for all. And that, regardless which side we belong by miserable reflex of clan or deliberate choice, we can not forget it. And all must be able to speak, fill the streets of people or be a minority zuit (Aristide knows it today), within the limits of the rights given to us by the Constitution and laws. We must say no to this temptation to prevent we demonstrate, one of the marks of the current government.

And, the worse, as one have to play to the Democrats for not too shocking the international community, which nevertheless forgives antics, childish pranks and authoritarianism to the executive (one ambassador did he not recently taken the tone of groupie or thurifer to praise the merits of this executive and shout against Parliament ?), it is to find a trick to counteract the crowds. Even if Dessalines must be set aside. We all know that the challenge for the executive was to put people on the streets on the anniversary of the assassination of the Emperor. It's true that this power is suffering from acute carnavalisme. 'Grouiller' is its symptom. But 'celebrate the life of Dessalines' would first be to remember that he not suicide, that he was carrying something, that we live in times that require reflection and recovery of our dignity so often tarnished by our leaders. The ridiculousness of the process would make smile if it only implied that the image already not too rosy of its inventors. Bamboche and cooptation. But it touch to the great Jacques. All is not farce and parody. It happens to the people to get angry when its symbols are attacked."
