Haiti - Cholera : Success of the second vaccination campaign 22/10/2014 12:58:42 "The results of the campaign show that the objective of vaccinating as a priority the most vulnerable people was reached in 2014 since 53% of recipients were women and children under 15 years (one third of children under 4 years old)," noted with satisfaction the Dr. Florence Duperval Guillaume, the Minister of Public Health. Recalling that suspected cases of cholera have decreased by 76% in 2014 compared to the same period in 2013 while 43% of suspected cases in 2013 were in fact related to other diarrheal diseases, this trend continues to confirm with 68% of suspected cases who were found to be actually other diseases that the cholera since the beginning of the year. Furthermore, the Committee noted the advances related to the planning of the work the implementation of the national sanitation campaign in the Central Department and the approval of plans for implementation for the Department of Artibonite. The campaign which is an integral part of National Plan for Elimination of Cholera, will help to prevent water-borne diseases and improve sanitation and access to water for the most vulnerable populations affected and awareness on hygiene methods. 313.454 people remain to be vaccinated by December 2015 on the target of 600,000.
