Haiti - Vertières : Vibrant tribute of President Martelly (speech)
As part of the commemoration of the 211th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières and contrary to what was announced by Lucien Jura, the Spokesman of the Presidency, the President Martelly went to Vertières and Cap Haitien.

Accompanied, among others by : Jean Renel Sanon, Minister of Justice, Lener Renaud, Minister of Defense and representatives of the Ministry of Culture, the President Martelly lay in Vertières a wreath at the foot of the monument erected in memory of those who sacrificed to allow their son and daughters to live as a free man in the first independent black republic in the world, the President Martelly paid tribute to the victory of the native army of the powerful army of Napoleon Bonaparte, November 18, 1803.

President Martelly calling on the population to the unit and solidarity declared "If we had to take up arms November 18, 1803, now it is necessary to use the weapon of dialectics to manage our differences", inviting all Haitians to come together to build a country worthy of the dream of our ancestors.

In addition, the Head of State met with the students and encouraged them to give more priority to their study in order to ensure their future. A Te Deum was also sung at the Cathedral of Cap.

In several streets of Cap and to Vertières marching bands, cheerleaders, bodies of honor and jugglers celebrate the 211th anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, while at the same time, at the call of the opposition protesters erected barricades of burning tires in few streets of Cap-Haitien and while in the capital, thousands of people demonstrated against the government in power.

In a message to the nation, pre-recorded earlier in the morning, the Head of State stressed the need to maintain a stable political climate in the country in the context of sustainable development. Also he asked his countrymen to put the higher interests of the nation above any quarrel.

Speech of President Martelly :
"Haitian people,
My countrymen,
My brothers and sisters,

Today is November 18, we celebrate the last battle that allowed Haiti to take its independence, this is the Battle of Vertières that did that today all we can say with great pride that we are Haitian.

This is the Battle of Vertières that made Haiti after the United States, the second independent country on the American continent.

This is the Battle of Vertières that makes us the first free black people of modern times.

Sing the National Anthem for our ancestors who won this victory.

The National Anthem for papa Dessalines, pour Pétion, Geffrard, Capois, Gabart, Daut, Clervau, Férou, Toussaint Brave, Christophe, Cangé, Vernet, Gérin, Jean-Louis François, Magny, Louise Gabart and Boisrond-Tonnerre.

That's heroic acts gave to many people on Earth to the seek of freedom the example. Haiti was a candle that lit the world to show the way to freedom, it was a exploit for a pack of blacks from slavery or who had their parents slaves.

Many people still consider the Battle of Vertières as a miracle, but Vertières was not a miracle, Vertières was not a chance, Vertières was possible because our ancestors despite all the differences they had have agreed to come together.

They agreed to work toward a objective that goes beyond their own interests.

Vertières would not have been possible if our ancestors had continued into the tear, the battle for power.

Vertières would not have been possible if everyone was not united under a single objective that was freedom.
For tomorrow better it is necessary that there are objective that unite us all.

For tomorrow better t is necessary that there are objectives that go beyond the interests of each.

Where the interests of a person threatens us all, we must have the courage and strength to recognize that the path we take is not the right path.

We must have the strength and courage to change direction.

Today November 18, the message that I bring to each and every Haitian, each compatriot whatever the place, whatever you are, whatever your camp, this is to put yourself together to support an objective.

An objective that is in the interest of every Haitian.

A noble objective

A objective that is to the dimension of the struggle that we have to lead.

This objective is a 'ayiti djanm'.

Our ancestors made Vertières in the collection, they are our pride, our example. We have an obligation before history to build a Haiti that is the pride of our ancestors, we must makes actions that are the pride of our children and grandchildren, we must stop making speeches about how we love Haiti, let actions proves that we love Haiti. We must stop follow the bad example, in our history there has finest examples to follow. Let us follow the union of our ancestors, that they have drawn and left for us, means that today we can say that we are Haitian.

It is time that we understand that no development is possible in instability.

It is time that we understand that it is often the Haitians that block Haiti. It is ourselves that block the country in the actions that we do each day.

It is time that we understand that us every Haitian, every citizen has its responsibility for the current situation of country. And it is our responsibility to change the face of the country.

It is time to pick up our character, to choose the best route for Haiti, not the route of a single person nor the route of a group, the route of all.

It is time that we understand that the rules of the game is not to get up every morning to ask the resignation of x or y because we need the power.

It is time that every politician understand the value of power, it is to change people's lives, the life of every Haitian.

The usefulness of all the powers is to ensure that every child of Haiti live better. When the people give us the power is for we take the decision that are good for him, decisions that are good for Haiti.

My countrymen,
My brothers and sisters,

Today, if Dessalines could talk he would have asked what have we done with Vertières? And we could not answer him it is the fault of others, we would be forced to lower our heads.

We must work to raise our head before history, working for the pride of our country, working for the dignity of our country and all its children.

Our ancestors did Vertières, we must build the Haiti of tomorrow.

Vive Vertières !

Vive a Haiti proud, dignified and prosperous !"
