Haiti - Security : Heavy toll of the road, situation in figures 20/11/2014 11:20:24 In view of the figures compiled by the OAVCT the toll of the road in Haiti is heavy... Statistiques 2000-2010 : Between 2000 and 2010, 45.780 road accidents at the national level were recorded. It should be noted that these figures are an underestimate since some accidents are not reported because some people involved choose not to file a complaint and resolve the matter amicably. 29.583 accidents occurred in urban areas and 16,200 in rural areas. Among those involved 16.889 people were between 25-35 years and 13.689 between 35-50 years. Among those involved in accidents, 34.857 a were men and 10.926 women. 2010-2014 statistics : The number of accidents recorded in Haiti in 2010 was 3,664, in 2011 increased to 4,710 in 2012 down to 3,831 in 2013 and continued to fall to 2,590. But in 2014, only until October (10 months), the number of accidents already registered is 2,884 and expected to increase further by the end of this year. October 2014 figures : In October 2014 the number of victims was 12 dead and 46 wounded. in the same month, there were 253 cases of accidents recorded. Among the vehicles involved 107 trucks, 87 motorcycles and 214 light vehicles. Weaknesses of the traffic laws in Haiti (among others) : With respect to driving under the influence of alcohol, in the decree on the registration and operation of vehicles, Article 44 punishes drunk, but did not specify what rate of alcohol in the blood i acceptable. On this point, the law says nothing. The lack of seat belt safety is punished under Article 42, but so far, the traffic police has enormous difficulties in enforcing these measures, drivers trivializing the importance of belt justifying forget. Yet we know that wearing seat belts saves lives in most cases. When a child is in a car, there must be a seat arranged for the child to be safe. This is what is done elsewhere, but not in Haiti. For speeding, Article 82 of the decree says that the speed limit is 50 km / h in urban areas, but in rural areas it is not limited unless there is a sign indicating a limitation. That is to say, those traveling on our national roads, can do what they want because the roads in Haiti are only partially marked. This requires that the law be formal and precise the speeds limit allowed on our national roads. HL/ HaitiLibre
