Haiti - Economy : The United Nations, Norway and the government united to develop the South Coast
A delegation of senior officials of the United Nations and the Government of Norway, which included Peter De Clercq, UN Resident Coordinator in Haiti and Trygve Bendiksby, Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Norway in Latin America, welcomed by the Departmental Delegate, Serge Chery visited for two days, several projects of the South Coast Initiative including: the rehabilitation of road infrastructure and the facilities of the Electric Cooperative in Roche à Bateau, the fish market in Port Salut, the mitigation work at the Millionnaire river in Saint Louis du Sud and the Interpretation Center of Nature of Aquin.

During his tour, Peter De Clercq welcomed the actions taken by the Haitian government thanks to the technical support of United Nations agencies operating in the South and the financing of Norway, the World Bank, the Inter-American Bank Development (IDB) and the European Union. He also praised the creation of the South Coast Initiative, aimed at supporting the Government through six programs: Sea South, South Land, South Energy, Road South, South Cities and South governance "My visit in the South is also to explore. There are actions that are are made here that one absolutely must rehearse in other areas of the country. For the year 2015, we will mostly support the Haitian government in the implementation of its actions."

For his part, Trygve Bendiksby, praised the cooperation between Haiti and Norway. "We are pleased to have concentrated our activities in the South Department. We want to strengthen this cooperation in the deep south in particular by developing new programs in support of the Haitian Government."

Taking advantage of the presence of this delegation, the delegate Serge Chérya insisted on the necessitated to go beyond a "individual projects" approach in the Haitian landscape. He recommends to work in a closely and integrated way for regional strategic development, based on the first steps taken by the Department of South of Haiti that has already laid the groundwork for such a territorial approach as an example to follow.

He also stressed the need for good coordination between actions of international institutions and the vision of the Government of Haiti, in order to achieve better results, "[...] If monitoring is provided by the Haitian government, there will be better guaranteed that the actions of the international arrive at terms in good conditions. It is an evidence to which clings religiously President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Joseph Michel Martelly."

Recall that since its creation in 2011, the South Coast Initiative coalition with the support of Norway, has enabled the realization of firsts for the development of the department following a territorial approach. Among these achievements include: the declaration of the first marine protected areas of the country, the first watershed management plan across the department, the first electric cooperative https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-10599-haiti-economy-first-electric-cooperative-in-haiti.html in the country and the first table of decentralized donors.
