Haiti - Education : 5 years later, UEH remembers...
On January 2010, at 16:53 an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 devastated Port-au-Prince and surrounding communities. 35 seconds later, 250,000 people, including 20,000 executives from the private and public sectors have lost their lives, about 1.5 million people are homeless, material losses are estimated at $ 14 billion by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB): Five years later, we are very far to measure the psychological impact of this drama where are the Haitians were not affected in some way by the loss of a parent, friend or acquaintance.

In a message, Jean Vernet Henry, Rector of the UEH recalls that "the State University of Haiti (UEH) is not spared. The greatest damage is registered in the Faculty of Applied Linguistics, where the Dean Pierre Vernet and his closest collaborators and many students have disappeared under the rubble of collapsed local. Overall, UEH had to lament the death of 27 of its senior officials or teachers and 380 students. The losses in terms of buildings and equipment destroyed were estimated at almost 43 million. Blow for an institution generally treated as a poor relation by those responsible for the management of public affairs.

January 12, 2015, what is the conclusion? What has been the progress?

At the national level, the political landscape is far from serene, the population lives in fear of a January 12, 2015 otherwise disastrous. At UEH, officials thought the best way to honor the victims, the best tribute that can be returned to them would be to take the provisions indicated to minimize risk in the event of other disasters.

In this vein:

1) An international symposium was organized by the UEH around the earthquake, with the participation of national and foreign specialists. The proceedings have been published under the title "Between Reconstruction and rebuilding: the problems of post-seismic future of Haiti";

2) Training sessions on risks and disasters were organized jointly by the UEH and Civil Protection Directorate;

3) In partnership with the Institute of Advanced Studies québéquois at Laval University International, UEH has implemented a training program with the theme: "Governance and institutional development, current challenges for Haiti" for the benefit of executives of Public Administration and the private sector, subject to bridge the deficit in human resources related to the loss of about 20,000 executives.

4) UEH has engaged in a partnership with Tulane University (USA) to conduct research on resilience in Haiti;

5) Unit for Geotechnical Research (URGEO) of the Faculty of UEH undertook a study on zoning in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, with a particular focus on the road of Frères, and organized a training session in Cap-Haitien in January 2013 on the use of geophysical methods to soil reconnaissance;

6) The Faculty of Humanities UEH has provided psycho accompaniment to many traumatized victims, while the population and development center (CEPODE) of the same faculty devoted a special issue of its journal to earthquake;

7) Many Haitian technicians have received training in earthquake-resistant construction, the result of cooperation between the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES), UEH and Antilles-Guyane University;

8) To signal finally, the steps taken by the University of UEH for the construction of a university campus to Damien, according to the wish of the University Council, in compliance with seismic standards.

The UEH was not limited to these specific actions. It consists involved in a national effort to strengthen the ability of the society to guard against such events. The signing of a Franco-Haitian agreement for the installation of a remote sensing center in the Campus Henri Christophe of the UEH in Limonade https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-12521-haiti-technology-towards-the-establishment-of-a-remote-sensing-space-centre.html represents a decisive step in this direction. Furthermore, an active reflection is underway in order to integrate the teaching of earthquake-resistant construction techniques and risk management programs in the curriculum.

The State University of Haiti, even in sheds, trying to get up, has understood this great national event as a call to perform its public service mission by accompanying people face the challenges of the time."
