Haiti - Social : A sound library to facilitate social inclusion 19/01/2015 11:15:56 The Sound Library "Roger Dorsinville" located to the local of the SHAA on Ricourt street Delmas 31 [which is part of the library network of Knowledge and Freedom Foundation (FOKAL)], allows the blind to surf the internet and conduct online consultation of the catalog of the library collections. There are also four computer stations adapted facilitating autonomous public access to the New Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) through a voice recognition software, zoom-test software, keyboard, large type and Braille keyboard. The total funds for this library is 5,028 books (2,760 books in regular character, 745 books in Braille and 1,049 sound works) whose stories, documentaries, poetry, novels, essays, news etc... In addition, the library has a specialized documentary collection of 200 works on disability issues, to the use of student researchers, that the SHAA plans to strengthen gradually, always with the support and understanding of Haitian authors. Dr. Michel A. Pean, National Coordinator of the SHAA says that this library is designed to contribute to making the right to read for all a reality in Haiti, because of its inclusiveness. Javier Niño Perez, the EU Ambassador to Haiti "Promoting social inclusion and access to the same rights of all citizens is at the heart of EU cooperation with Haiti. As such, we are proud to have contributed with a budget of 100,000 euros to an innovative project that meets a very high demand and provides concrete improvements in the lives of thousands of citizens." It should be noted that 45% of library members are blind. The library is an open door to universal accessibility. In addition to the visually impaired, it is visited daily by no blind people (students, children, foreigners, etc...) who come to listen sounds. The Research students in human sciences, making their output memory with Disabilities, found there a lot of documents. Moreover, this library also benefits from the expertise of the librarian Odile Nicoloso, wife of the Ambassador of France accredited to Haiti.
