Haiti - Justice : The new Minister of Justice takes office
Tuesday, Me Pierre Richard Casimir, the new Minister of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), was officially installed in office, in the presence of the outgoing Minister Me Jean Renel Sanon, the Vice-President of the Court of Cassation, of the Director of the Cabinet of the President of the Republic, representatives of the international community, the president of the National Association of Haitian Magistrates (ANAMAH), magistrates, the President of the Bar Association of Port-au-Prince and executives and employees of the Ministry.


Jean Renel Sanon, outgoing Minister called his successor (and friend) to implement a series of initiatives that have been initiated under his direction, including the construction of courts in the various jurisdictions of the country.

The Minister Casimir thanked the Head of State for his trust and promised to continue the work of his predecessor, according to the policy of the Rule of Law. He said he was aware of the importance of the issues and the scale of the challenges that are at the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and taken the formal engament "to ensure with particular care to the strengthening of security of lives and goods, the rule of law, which is fundamental to the absolute independence of the judiciary."

Me Casimir also intends to vigorously combat the phenomenon of prolonged pretrial detention in Haiti "It is not reasonable and even less legal, that many people are detained for long without being referred by before their natural judges; so without a court decision."

The Minister Casimir romised to be guided by the rule of law. "I do not represent or defend any particular interest, no chapel, no trades, much less a law firm. Only the collective interest is important for me !"

Me Casimir which was hitherto, Special Adviser to the Head of State, was glad to return to a Ministry where he made his debut "For fifteen years now since I held the position of Deputy Director of Cabinet within this Ministry."

Carlos Hercules, president of the Bar Association of Port-au-Prince, wished, on the sidelines of the ceremony, that the new Minister take all measures to return to legality regarding appointments of judges and parquetiers in the 18 jurisdictions in the country.
