Haiti - Diplomacy : Words of sympathy from the International 18/02/2015 09:06:21 Tuesday, Jen Psaki, Spokesman of the US State Department declared "The United States is deeply saddened by the tragic accident today during Carnival celebrations in Port-au-Prince. We extend our sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who were killed and we wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. The accident is all the more saddening coming during Haiti’s national festivities for Carnival. During this difficult time our thoughts and prayers are with the people and government of Haiti." Canadian Government Tuessday, Christian Paradis, Canadian Minister of International Development and La Francophonie declared "I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and the injuries suffered as a result of the tragic accident during the second day of the Port-au-Prince Carnival in Haiti. This gathering is meant to be a celebration of Haitian music, dance, and culture. The accident at the Champ de Mars is particularly shocking. On behalf of all Canadians, I express my profound sympathy to the families, friends and loved ones of those persons killed in this tragedy." United Nations On behalf of the United Nations family in Haiti, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Sandra Honoré, expresses her sympathy to the Government of the Republic of Haiti and the Haitian people over the tragic accident during the Carnival festivities in Port-au-Prince on Tuesday 17 February, in which 16 persons lost their lives and many others were injured. She offers her deepest condolences to the families, relatives and friends of the victims and wishes the injured a speedy recovery. Embassy of Haiti in Canada "It is with deep sadness, that the Embassy of Haiti learns that an unexpected tragedy just bring grief the capital this Tuesday 17th February durin the carnival periode, festivities, successful so far. In these painful circumstances, the Embassy of Haiti joins the President of the Republic, to express its sincere condolences to the relatives of the deceased victims, and also hope a speedy recovery to compatriots in hospital." Organization of American States The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed his deepest sympathies and solidarity to the Government and people of Haiti over the tragic and horrible accident that marred this morning’s carnival festivities. According to the Haitian authorities, at least 16 people were confirmed dead and 78 were injured. In doing so, he was joined by Assistant Secretary General and President of the Group of Friends of Haiti, Albert Ramdin, who learned "with great sadness and distress" of this morning’s tragedy. In this moment of profound grief, the OAS leaders also wish to convey their "most heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families."
