Haiti - Economy: The defense of consumer rights should be the priority struggle
Friday, the Department of Quality Control and Consumer Protection (DCQPC) of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MCI), celebrated the World Consumer Rights Day around the theme "The right of consumers to a healthy diet". On this occasion, the Directorate of Quality Control and Consumer Protection, organized a series of conferences and debates aimed at raising awareness on issues related to consumption.

Hervé Day, the Minister of Trade and Industry (MCI) has on this occasion delivered a speech in which he explained the actions of MCI and recalled that it is timely to note that the MCI is working hard to acquire all the legal and legal instruments necessary for the effective protection of consumers. To this end, the Law Project on Consumer Protection, the one on the quality control of food as well as establishing the Haitian Bureau of Standards and Metrology aimed at strengthening inspection devices, of control and metrology were submitted to the Haitian Parliament to be voted on time. The vote on these texts will help dig for the consumer in the Haitian market, remedies highlighting abuses and social injustices that too often undermine the rights of consumers.

Reporting that the MCI has undertaken continuously monitoring actions at the distribution of consumer products. The food sales establishments have been checked for compliance with the requirements for the labeling of prepackaged products and hygienic conditions.

In this vein, a quality control program of the quality of treated water and marketed was launched in 2012. To date, in Port-au-Prince, in its surroundings have beenachieved at the level of processing and marketing companies the testing, auditing of companies and sampling in these companies.

For two years, given the growing contributions from consumers to business, MCI through DCQPC facilitated the establishment of 10 departmental federations of associations of consumers, based on the concept of proximity management in order to have better monitoring of goods and services to meet the requirements within the framework of consumer protection and attracting the adherence, involvement of a greater number of individuals in the Haitian consumer movement.

This strategy is part of the perspective of creating a synergy around the various actors associated with consumption but mostly to pave the way for new consumption patterns and behaviors of our consumers for the purpose of collective pursuit of quality , real lever able to make our companies competitive and put the country on the road to sustainable development.

This effort responds to the pressing need to equip, to provide all consumers with useful and necessary information to make informed choices in all understanding and actively participate in economic life and development.

By editing a magazine of Consumer and facilitating the implementation of these federations, the DCQPC of MCI meets to a requirement of protection and social justice for consumers.

Speaking of this year's theme "The right of consumers to a healthy diet", which according to him is quite suggestive because the unhealthy foods are the cause, according to WHO of thousands of deaths per year worldwide. In 2010 more than 11 million deaths worldwide have been linked to poor diet he recalled, Haiti is not free from this evil.

This theme appeals to producers (large / small) food, street vendors, restaurateurs in Haiti so that they are more fussy, more pay greater attention to issues of consumption, including the nutritional value of food. In other words, to show more respect vis-à-vis the consumer.

In addition, the Minister has asked consumers to be vigilant, responsible for manufactured foods sold meet quality standards in accordance with the requirements. We advise them to unite their energies to defend their interests and their rights while demanding quality not only for their health but also for their financial balance.

He urged the Consumer Associations to make the defense of consumer rights their priority struggle helping them to make their voices heard and to defend their interests. The draft Law on Consumer Protection tabled in Parliament in July 2012, by the MCI will be beneficial not only for consumers but also for the entrepreneur that will develop in its enterprise a culture of quality, central element that will contribute to competitiveness, economic growth and development of our country.

All this reflects the need to create a platform for discussion, exchange of ideas between the public authorities, the c consumer protection associations, economic operators to ensure better protection for consumers and demonstrate thus the priority given to justice for consumers, concluded the Minister Day.
