"Coffee Dondon, roasted nuts of Cap Haitien, Northeast honey, the Douces makos of Petit Goâve, the paper mache masks of Jacmel, or the rara of Léogâne are all local products that mark the minds of travelers," it said in the foreword of the new catalog of typical products. These products, selected from more than 500 others, are part of the 30 products identified by the IOM and UNDP as being carriers of opportunities for wealth creation in Haiti.

Also, the typical products of Haiti were divided into three categories. These are the products derived of natural and cultural heritage (the Citadelle of Capor Jacmel Bassin Bleu for example), local agriculture (especially vetiver, mango francisque or the guinea fowl) and finally the small industry and handicraft products such as chocolate, sweet cassava or cut iron.

"The MCI will go further by developing a document for each product including an action plan, a methodology and a business plan. We want, in the near future, structuring the sectors of the typical products, upgrading value chains, facilitate access to credit, label the products and to facilitate market access for producers," indicated the Minister of Trade and Industry, Jude Hervey Day.

Surrounded by his counterparts from the MEF, the Ministry of Tourism and Agriculture, Jude Hervey Day also encouraged investors came to rediscover the potential of Haiti to support the local economy by developing sectors of local products.

"This catalog is a starting point to take back our agriculture, and I am very proud. It is clear that the economic potential of Haiti is important, we must now reduce our imports and increasing our production in order to create jobs and attract new investors," declared resener Dorcin, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development.

The Minister of Tourism, Ms. Balmir-Villedrouin, has in turn highlighted the valued tourist potential in the catalog "Haiti is no in shortage of tourist interest but of infrastructure. We must allow tourists to stay longer on our sites and create on them added value by making derivatives like miniature citadels or example."

Sophie de Caen, Director Principal of UNDP for her part, stressed the importance of supporting the creation of inclusive employment through local economic initiatives "Haiti needs work to gradually emerge from poverty. Also, UNDP can only rejoice of an initiative that allows the creation of inclusive jobs while promoting local wealth."
