Haiti - Education : More than one million schoolchildren will benefit from school canteens
For this new school year 2010-2011, the National plan of School canteens (Programme National de Cantines Scolaires PNCS) and the World Food Programme (WFP) announce that their school lunch program will serve 1.1 million schoolchildren who will thus be assured of a warm meal daily in schools across the country.

School feeding is a priority for Haiti. Support for school canteens is essential to ensure attendance at school, and raise households made more vulnerable by the earthquake. Although the program is currently targeted, the government's goal is to reach all children of school age in the country by the next 18 months.

Many partners have united under the leadership of the National School Feeding such as: the World Bank, Brazil, Canada, USAID, the World Food Program and at least 25 national and international NGOs that support the implementation of the program.

The importance of this program has become even greater after the earthquake and WFP to Haiti to support the program in terms of technical and logistical support to the Haitian government and will give strategic support that will be useful to expand it.

Another objective of the school lunch program for 2010-2011 is to increase the use of food produced in Haiti. By ensuring a steady demand for local products and stable, the school lunch program may contribute to the development of agriculture and local economies. The purchase by WFP from 1000 metric tonnes of maize meal has been completed and a tender is underway to purchase a similar quantity of rice in Haiti.

Another project will start as the new school year. The NSCP, in collaboration with WFP, has an agreement with the Association of Dairy Producers label owner "LET A GOGO" for the production of pasteurized milk. The milk will be distributed to children in schools. The NSCP is the institution responsible for Haiti school feeding efforts in the country. Last year, he fed directly 250.000 children through government resources.
