Haiti - Politic : «Our flag is our dignity, our pride» dixit Martelly
The town of Arcahaie hosts this Monday, May 18 the celebration of the 212th anniversary of the creation of the Haitian flag in the presence of the Head of State, Michel Martelly accompanied by the First Lady, Sophia Martelly, the Prime Minister, Paul Evans, Ministers, Secretaries of State, Directors General and members of the diplomatic corps.

The ceremony began with the rise of our two-tone, floral offerings at the feet of statues of Jean Jacques Dessalines and Catherine Flon, followed by a minute's silence.

In his speech to the Nation President Martelly declared :

Excerpts from the speech of President Martelly :
"[...]

Haitian people,

On May 18, 1803 in the locality of the Marotte in Archaie, Catherine Flon sewed with the thread of her hair, the blue and red bands of the first Haitian flag. A sovereign Nation capable of forming its own destiny, had been equipped with its banner.

If during the past four years, my message around the celebration of 18 May, has always focused on calls for the unity of all the son of this land, it is because through this original two-tone, the sacred union of all the children of Haiti was finally sealed and wanted to be the only condition that can provide to our Nation, paths of hope and a destiny to the ambitions of our ancestors.

Engaged in the final stretch of my presidential term, it seems more judicious to me to take advantage of the Flag day to bring the Haitian people to reflect and meditate on these missed appointments of history, those lost years and that future ruined in the division, to encourage us to go beyond our immediate and personal concern, to launch us in an assault called to delivering Haiti from the constraints that oppresses it, in worthy son and daughter of the valiant forgers of our independence.

Our flag, the most powerful symbol of our national identity, fleet today to remind us every second the weight of the blood shed by the Fathers to bequeath us this land, as well as our duty to sacrifice for this emblem is forever a source of pride and honor for us, for our children and our children's children.

In 1803 we had to fight against foreign troops and expel them from our land, to become an independent Nation, a sovereign Nation.

Today it seems that without the presence and assistance of foreign troops in the land of Dessalines, this independence so dearly conquered by the Fathers, with their blood, would be jeopardized so our inability to Peace in us, to take our destiny in hand of free people turned out.

What a tragic and disturbing irony... This black people who first planted on its soil the banner of freedom, would it truly incapable today to assume the fate of its Nation ? Do we still have to learn to walk united as the Fathers, to understand that from our soil, we must be absolutely the only masters today ?

It is necessary that this change, it is necessary that in our skies the bicolor fleet again to present a proud and strong people.

A sovereign nation, able to fully guarantee within its borders and by its own means, peace, stability and the enjoyment of all rights and freedoms.

Today we must at all costs, maintain and assume through education, the civic and patriotic values that surround the worship of our two colors.

Let's strengthening ranks around our flag, we must honor it, cherish it, defend it and above all, respect it.

Our flag is our dignity, our pride, is our identity, it is the symbol of our freedom, of our union to move forward, serene and victorious, towards a future where all achievements are possible.

The Haitian miracle will take place, only if in our minds, in our attitudes and in our hearts, we want to be jointly responsible for our common destiny and act together to overcome the little nothing that separates us from one another, so that we form a beam against the constraints and barriers that paralyze our momentum.

[...]

Haitian people,

Our flag is the greatest symbol that represents our pride, our dignity and our identity as a people, we must honor it, respect it, to be able to inspire our youth, encourage our children to love and remain attached to their country.

Like our ancestors, we must always be ready to defend it to the death.

[...]

In 1803, to have this flag, we fought, we put the colonialist forces outside the country, to have a free and independent Nation. Today, so we don't agree between us, we dont' put together, we fight so much between us, that it's the others who are there to put a stop between us.

The faster we will agree, the sooner we will put peace among us, the faster the others will leave the country, the faster we will back the head of ourselves.

So what we want today, what we really want Haitian people ?

[...]

Do you want a Haiti where foreigners interfering in our business all the time or you want a free Nation where we can decide together between Haitian, the road we want to take for tomorrow is better for us ?

[...]

Dessalines fought for an independent country, he gave his blood for us to get together, to look in the same direction, to embrace the same vision for Haiti to become a rich Nation, great, united, a Nation that all peoples of the Earth respects.

It is in the Union that we must remove all obstacles that prevent us from moving forward on the path of progress, development and democracy [...]

I say it with force for Haiti, for Haitians and for the flag, there is no sacrifice that I would not do. Dessalines thought like that and we must all think like that today.

[...]

The time has come when Haiti must become a real country, a serious country where all rights are respected and in which each person accomplished his duty as it should be.

[...]

There is a lot of work, it's difficult, but we're not afraid and we will not back, our ancestors dis not back [...] Haitians, let's put our forces together to move faster on the road that our ancestors have traced for us, let's send Haiti higher, so that the flag can float higher and higher.

This is what our ancestors wanted for us, this is what we have to do, and that's what we do every day, so that Haiti can find its place with all due respect, among all other major Nation on Earth.

Vive Haiti,
Vive the Haitian flag

Thank you a lot"
