Haiti - Health : 68th World Health Assembly (Geneva)
A Haitian delegation of the Ministry of Public Health and Population participated in the 68th World Health Assembly, which ended in Geneva on 26 May 2015. On the sidelines of the Assembly, Dr. Jean Patrick Alfred, assistant Director of the Study and Planning Unit (EPU) of the Ministry, gave a joint high-level conference with other international experts in Health on the theme "Building and Maintaining the resilience to face global health challenges" to share their views and experiences on the issue of health resilience.

The conference, organized by the LMG project (Leadership, Management and Governance), funded by USAID and Johnson & Johnson, was attended by several experts, researchers and students from leading universities worldwide, present in Geneva to share ideas and strengthening collaborative links in the field of health.

Dr. Alfred strongly emphasized the importance of good leadership in the health system to build and maintain this resilience. This leadership is a daily reality at the MSPP in the implementation of health programs. In clear and compelling terms, he explained the various mechanisms within the MSPP, after the cataclysm of 12 January, to address the challenges punctual as recurrent outbreaks but above all manage the long-term challenges such as disease chronic.

Politically, Dr. Alfred think that a commitment at the highest level of the state and political actors, manifested in practice by an indomitable will in the actions on the ground, reveals a must for this resilience become a realty, fundamental element for the structuring of the health system.

In addition, he said that with the globalization, epidemics cross borders dramatically. No country can claim to be totally immune. Hence the importance of boosting relations between the countries to contain outbreaks and save lives. Later, he mentioned the need to establish a good multisectoral collaboration with a common vision that focuses on the well being of the population. This helps to address the major challenges that the health sector still faces "Health problems must challenge all sectors of national life. This is not an exclusive responsibility of the Ministry of Health that must deal alone," he concluded.

The Haitian delegation was composed of Dr. Jean Alfred Patrick, Assistant Director of the Unit for Studies and Programming; Dr Reynold Grand Pierre, Director of Family Health and Paula Brunache, Member of Cabinet of the Minister of Public Health and Population.
