Haiti - Social : Nearly 200,000 Haitian families affected by drought
According to the National Coordination for Food Security (CNSA), food insecurity is expected to deteriorate until the end of the year, with an expected increase in the number of cases of severe acute malnutrition and waterborne diseases.

A rapid assessment of the agricultural situation in May, conducted by CNSA and some of its partners in the Food and Nutrition Security Technical Group (GTSAN) showed that drought had a negative effect on water availability and local products on the markets. This has led to a drought affecting the Southeast regions, North-West, Upper Artibonite, Central and Northeast.

According to CNSA Assessment Report, 199,967 families dependent mainly on agriculture, are affected by this situation at the country's 10 departments. The evaluation allowed to observe a premature termination of the rainy season, a total lack of rain in some areas and a late start in other areas. Rainfall has proved clearly inadequate and irregular at the level of the major pat of the territory.

Regarding access to water, it was found a dry or a lower throughput of the sources. Consequently, there is strong pressure on scarce water points where there has been a lot of violence, especially in the Southeast and Northwest. The issue of water is becoming more and more critical especially in Grand Gosier, Thiotte, Anse-à-Pitres (Bois-d'Orme), Belle-Anse (Orange Bay, Marbriole).

A Thiotte, for example, two water points exist at the level of the commune including one hardly accessible for the majority of the population. Families put 3-4 hours just to get to the water source. In Grand Gosier, families must travel to Thiotte or Belle Anse to source in water unless sourcing in the brackish water wells of the seafront.

Agricultural production has declined significantly because of the scarcity of seed (due to crop losses) for the next campaign, likely to affect the next farming season (sowing in July/August).

The report stresses that "The livestock situation seems to be a bit more critical at certain communes of the Southeast Department (Thiotte, Grand Gosier, Anse à Pitre (Bois d'Orme) and Northwest (Baie de Henne, Bombardopolis, Mole Saint Nicolas). Is already reported cases of animal deaths in some areas."

In a context like this, strengthening household food programs are taken into account, as well as the implementation of high intensity labor activities. In the medium term, the actions must be oriented towards the mastery of water including the construction/rehabilitation of irrigation system and hill reservoir construction and family cisterns.

With respect to urgent responses, CNSA recommends that "the actions of water distribution (already initiated by DINEPA in Southeast level) are supported and strengthened. The distribution of water treatment kits and distribution of food kits in support to school feeding programs for the next school year must be strengthened. It is also urgent to allow farmers to resume their farming activities by providing them with seeds and agricultural inputs. Training activities in rural communities affected on agricultural practices resilient to drought and nutrition education are also necessary."
