Haiti - FLASH : Total paralysis at the border, 20,000 jobs threatened in Haiti
Tuesday, Andrés Navarro, Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs, warned that the conflict between the Government of Haiti and the National Federation of Dominican Transportation (FENATRADO) [which includes 200 unions representing over 90% of Dominicans carriers] which refuses to transport goods in Haiti since August 3, creates a shortage of food and other goods, which will worsen the crisis in Haiti.

Recall that this conflict is in response to incidents that occurred between 24 and 26 July https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-14686-haiti-flash-dr-will-stop-supplying-haiti-in-3-days.html where 60 trucks were attacked and damaged (broken windows and burned or slashed tires), wounding 20 Dominican drivers, some had to be admitted to the hospital in Jimani Melenciano. Individuals had also looted goods, cement, rebar, medicines, foods and fabrics intended for free zones. The President of the Fenetrado, had indicated that damage to trucks amounted to over 100 million pesos, not including the theft of goods. Since then, the FENATRADO declared an unlimited strike of transportation to Haiti as long the Government of Haiti will not ensure the safety of Dominican carriers in the territory of Haiti.

Last week, Ricardo de los Santos, Vice President FENATRADO, announced prematurely, the conclusion of an agreement with Haiti and the resumption of freight traffic, however it has not happened because Haiti has finally not ratified this agreement, without explanation....

"We talked to have a dialogue and even truckers union of the two nations agreed and developed a draft agreement with several points, but the Haitian authorities made them await as well as Dominican ambassador in Haiti Rubén Silié." Andrés Navarro explained that he tried to intervene to find a solution between the truckers and the Haitian government "but the Haitian authorities have shown no interest in guaranteeing the safety of the drivers of the FENATRADO and even postponed meetings, which could end the conflict [...]"

Furthermore, the Chancellor Navarro said the Korean Embassy in Haiti, had sent diplomatic notes in which he asked him to intervene because Korean companies operating in free zones in Haiti risked paralysis by lack of raw materials. The Chancellor believes that if the crisis worsens the situation in Haiti will be felt in the Dominican Republic.

Tuesday morning, the Dominican truckers have hardened their position, preventing Haitian cargo trucks from the Dominican Republic to enter Haiti, allowing only the passenger vehicles and motorcycles... Blas Peralta and los Ricardo Santos President and Vice-President of the FENATRADO, said from Jimani, they decided not to allow the transport of goods in both directions, "We will not accept blackmail or teasing [...] if the Haitian government does not guarantee the safety of our trucks and our drivers entering the territory of Haiti and they do not come back without damage, no one will transport freight in Haiti, even them will not be able to make transport [from the Dominican Republic]."

20,000 haitian jobs, unemployed soon :
Georges Sassine, the Director of the Free Zone Lafiteau declared "no less than four plants, representing 20,000 jobs are about to cease all production activity, for lack of raw materials (fabric, thread, zippers, buttons, boxes cardboard, plastic bags, etc...) [...] three factories to the SONAPI in addition to the Caracol Industrial Park, which representing together (4) 50% of 40,000 sector jobs, depend on three plants in the Dominican Republic, who are their suppliers, currently find themselves run out of inputs. [...] The plant Multiwear of Richard Coles to the SONAPI has already had to cease all production activity, for lack of inputs. [...] Only the South Koreans managed to circumvent the blockade by receiving two containers by sea, but it costs them four times more expensive..."
