Haiti - ERIKA : Orange alert in Haiti, the threat is serious
Thursday, after its passage of the Caribbean arc, the Tropical Storm Erika has strengthened. This morning at 5:00 Tropical Storm Erika is located at 17.7N 67.7W or 122km to the southeast of Punta Cana, 58 km southwest of Puerto Rico.

It is currently moving at 28km/h along a trajectory West Northwest and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 48 hours. This Friday, Erika started affecting the Dominican Republic. All departments of Haiti remain under the threat of heavy rains that could cause flooding, landslides and flash floods, especially the departments of the North and the Northern coastal regions. The winds will generate rough seas with waves higher than 15 feet, it is not recommended to go out at sea.

The National Management Plan for Risk and Disaster (PNGRD) has been activated, face the threats of heavy rain and strong winds with risks of rockfalls, landslides and floods on all northern areas of the country.

The current forecast provide for winds of 85km/h with higher gusts. The winds extend outward up to 240km from the center of Erika, mainly to the north and east.

Erika is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches (10 - 20cm) with maximum amounts of 12 inches (30 cm) possible across portions of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the southeastern and central Bahamas through Saturday. These rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.

"This storm could cause significant rain accumulations, wave heights and gusty winds abnormal in Haiti, particularly in the northern part. Therefore, the National Meteorological Center (CNM) of Haiti continues to monitor this system and asked the inhabitants of risk areas to remain very vigilant."

Civil Protection (DPC) of Haiti declared "the tropical storm Erika contains much water, it could pass near the coasts of Haiti and start hitting Haiti Friday night and cause heavy rain and big waves, especially in the northern part of the country."

"We are present at the civil protection and we maintain the mobilization for rapid and effective interventions to help people affected by this storm. We proceeded to the conveying of non-food stocks to 4 departments and we also supplied the stocks at the commune of Fonds-Verrettes and other commune at high risks in the West department," declared Thursday Ariel Henry, Minister of Interior and local authorities.

Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, the Director of Civil Protection asking the public not to cross rivers and to move off as quickly as possible from risk zones targeted by civil protection, to reduce risk and better manage the situation "The population in general and the inhabitants of the particular risk areas are called for vigilance and asked to strictly follow the safety instructions to avoid casualties face the threats of heavy rain and strong winds can cause flooding and landslides," adding "the threat is serious."

CNM together with the SPGRD and DPC asks the population in risk areas to remain vigilant and strictly implement the following safety instructions in case of flooding, rockfalls, landslides, storms and high winds.

Instructions :

  • Prepare to evacuate areas prone to flooding and landslides (seaside, gullies, rivers, mountain slopes, etc...) ;
  • Do not cross rivers in flood under any circumstances ;
  • In case of thunderstorms and strong winds, you do not shelter near windows and wooded area ;
  • Secure anything that can be carried by the wind and is located outside the house, trash, tools, posters, lamps, decorative bulbs ;
  • Go down any heavy object placed above: antennas, signs... ;
  • Do not go in the sea. If you are already there, come back to the mainland ;
  • Refit boats and moor them well away from shore securely ;
