Haiti - J.J. Dessalines : Duty of memory
Saturday, as part of the commemoration of the 209th anniversary of the death of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, went to Pont Rouge (Port-au-Prince) to pay special tribute to Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the first Head of State of Haiti, the Emperor Jacques 1st, assassinated 17 October 1806.

The first part of the official commemoration ceremony was marked among other things by the laying of a wreaths at the foot of the monument of Founding Father of the Homeland, a moment of reflection and ringing the dead. It was attended by the President of the Court of Cassation, Me Jules Cantave, the Prime Minister, Mr. Evans Paul, and other representatives of the great powers of the Stateas well as a delegation of students from the Lycée Jean-Jacques Dessalines. The latter rendered, for their part a fitting tribute to the Independence hero.

In his circumstantial message, the Head of State renewed his call for national unity. He believes that the sacrifices made by our ancestors to bequeath us this land today deserve that we are sacrificing our egos for the common good. The President Martelly for whom Jean-Jacques Dessalines is still alive in our minds, in our hearts and in our consciousness, invites the Haitian people, all sectors indiscriminately, to walk together in the footsteps of "Papa Dessalines' to achieve the dream of living together, social justice and well-being that cherished the Emperor (Speech of the Head of State https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15482-haiti-politic-tribute-of-michel-martelly-to-jean-jacques-dessalines.html )

Furthermore, the President Martelly as did the Head of Government, welcomed the redevelopment undertaken in Pont Rouge where the Memorial (abstract painting, giant wall portrait of Jean-Jacques Dessalines) was recently renovated by architect Daniel Elie. Also the Carrefour Aviation, located not far from the memorial, was renamed Saturday Carrefour Dessalines.

Prime Minister Evans Paul, in this solemn ceremony, also wished to exalt the founding father, by exposing its great visionary values, of heroes, liberating, warrior, advocate of social justice, of equity, of coexistence, equality of the human races, and that especially of the black race. He took the opportunity to appeal all Haitians to patriotic unity, to the safeguarding of the country, its development and its progress (Speech by Prime Minister Paul Evans https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15482-haiti-politic-tribute-of-michel-martelly-to-jean-jacques-dessalines.html )

The commemoration ceremony ended at Marchand Dessalines, the former capital of Haiti under the Empire of the Founding Father of the Nation, where the President of the Republic attended in the late morning a Requiem Mass, followed by the Te Deum and made a floral offering at the foot of the Monument of Jean-Jacques Dessalines. He then addressed the people on the Place d'Armes in the city, focusing once again on the ideal dessalinien.

After the ceremony, a parade of the Emperor, composed of members of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and students from various schools in the capital paid tribute to the founding father of the Nation.
