Haiti - FLASH : Vertières, message to the Nation of President Martelly 18/11/2015 08:14:35
"Haitian people, On November 18, 1803 our ancestors have come together, they fought to give us this piece of land, where today we all live in freedom, respect and dignity. In this battle they waged to thwart the slave system and then create a Nation master of itself, they were not afraid by bullets, cannonballs did not make them retreat, they were determined to make every sacrifice to fight to the death to break all the chains that prevented them from living as individuals and, welded together black and mulatto, they arrived to surprise the world when they won this victory over Napoleon's army. An army that had never lost a battle. Vertières was not only the victory with of black with mulattos on white settlers, Vertières was also the victory of freedom, of human rights on oppression, on the exploitation, over exclusion and racism. It was an example that our ancestors traced to put Haiti ahead, as a country that has opened the doors of freedom and independence for many other nation on Earth. This is what the commemoration of 18 November must remember us and that is what we are celebrating today. This is what makes that with great pride and on behalf of all Haiti's children, wherever they are, whatever their conditions or their opinions, I bend me to salute the memory of all those men who have invested their soul, their courage and their life in Vertières, to be able to offer us a different future in a country that is free, a country that is independent. It is a time for all of us, we remove our hats to say 'onè', 'onè respè ak ochan pou yo' 'ochan' for Dessalines, Pétion, Geffrard, Capois, Gabart, Daut, Clervau, Férou, Toussaint Brave, Christophe, Cangé, Vernet, Gérin, Jean-Louis François, Magny, Louise Gabart and Boisrond-Tonnerre and the others. It is time that we begin to give youth a better example for how to run the country tomorrow, so that it not take like us, shame and disappointment of the occupation of foreign forces on the land of Dessalines. Youth of my country, This is my last speech of 18 November as President, I want to tell you what I see today is not what our ancestors wanted for us. That's not why they fought, and it is not what the country of Haiti had to be today. If the generations before us have misunderstood how to run the country, you have to show 'tout bon vre' that you are the heirs of men who braved the bullets and cannonballs, for Haiti to become a Nation master of itself. Our ancestors had a single dream for us, that Haiti become a more beautiful Nation, a Nation that is strong, that is proud, a Nation respected by others, where can be build society where every citizen has the same rights, where it may be equal before the law, justice, where everyone has access to all resources. Our ancestors dreamed for us of a united Haiti, a Haiti that advances every day with more strength on the road to democracy, on the road to progress on the road of sustainable development To walk the path they have paved for us, it is with this Haiti we must make an appointment today. Youth of my country, The appointment of tomorrow is your appointment, victory of tomorrow should be your victory, we must not miss it, in the same way that our ancestors, you must gather all your strength, all your convictions, forget all your differences, divisions. Join forces to become one, to win the battle for independence 'total capital' of the country of Haiti. Haitians, brothers and sisters, The pride we feel, as we celebrate the 212th year of the victory of Vertières, must make us aware, makes us decide to make every sacrifice for the country to overcome the current situation.
