Haiti - Dominican Republic : First Meeting of the Binational Economic Council Quisqueya
At the first meeting of the Binational Economic Council Quisqueya (CEBQ) between leaders of the sector for the Development of the border of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the Technical Commission for Border Management (CTF) of Haiti and the Dominican counterpart the "Direccion General de Desarrollo Fronterizo" (DGDF) agreed at the end of the meeting to work closely through consistent efforts, to address issues that concern the two countries, especially on 13 themes as priorities for the stability and economic growth of both countries namely include: smuggling, trade and investment, regional development plans, especially in official crossing axes on the land border, the environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources, common threats, administrative and customs infrastructure, interconnection of road networks.

The interaction between the two institutions aims to harmonize their strategic development plans and create synergies at the levels of public policy and field operations. They agreed to work to put in place the appropriate administrative capacity to improve the living conditions of residents of established communities on the border fringe "the CEBQ will provide an opportunity to discuss issues such as the identification, planning and facilitation of private investments as a means to create work opportunities on both sides of the border," said Marc Antoine Acra, Chairman of CEBQ-Haiti.

Both parties agree that such public and private investment will be consistent with development plans adopted by the two governments also taking into account the environmental, common threats...

Miguel Bejaran, Director General of DGDF, stated that "the development of the four zones of Ouanaminthe / Dajabon, Belladère / Elias Pina, Malpasse / Jimaní and Anse-à Pitres / Pedernales, the points of major economic and commercial activities between the two nations, can be obtained through the creation of industrial parks and other economic partnerships that can create jobs from the comparative advantages of each country in order to attract private investment with support from governments and international partners."

"Haitian private and Dominicans have much to gain from good binational relations. However, we must establish clear rules and commit to transparency and fairness. More efficient and transparent customs administration and border control will harmonize trade flows," added Marc Antoine Acra.

This entity was formed by a committee of business leaders of Haitian and Dominican private sector in order to create sustainable development in the border region between the two countries, from 4 areas.
