Haiti - Politic : Official launch of the Binational Observatory
Wednesday at the Marriott Hotel in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and the Dominican Republic officially launched the Binational Observatory on Migration, Education, Environment and Trade (OBMEC).

This entity which brings together some universities of the two countries including: Quisqueya (Haiti), Notre Dame (Haiti) and the Episcopal University of Haiti (UNEPH) for the Dominican Republic the Universidad Educación y Cultura Acción Pro (APEC), the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), the University Instituto Superior de Agricultura (ISA) and the Universidad Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU), is a space for reflection and exchanges on binational issues. Its mission is to contribute to reconciliation and mutual understanding between the Haitian and Dominican populations in the perspective of a sustainable social and economic development for both countries.

The National Observatory is part of the Support Program for the Joint Bilateral Commission (CMB) in the sense that it will make available to CMB, studies to support decisions of both governments. Similarly the Observatory will have available, tools and continuous analysis of the dynamics of relationships within 4 priority research themes (migration, environment, education and trade).

The Authorising Jean Jacques Charles and Antonio Vargas Hernandez respectively from Haiti and the Dominican Republic attended the ceremony. Also participating in the meeting, the Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union in Haiti, Vincent Degert; Regine Lamour, Technical Secretary of the Joint Commission of Haiti and numerous personalities and stakeholders from both countries.

In the context of many problems and tensions between the two countries, the speakers stressed the need for the two republics to strengthen ties in order to harmonize relations between the two brotherly peoples, condemned to live together on the same island.

"We believe that dialogue is possible. As academics, we must be above the fray. While remaining neutral, we will contribute in a strong and reliable manner, by producing knowledge to put them at the service of both countries to improve relations," said a speaker on behalf of the Observatory.

During the first two years, the OBMEC proposes to carry out field work on the four priority themes.

Recall that the establishment of this Observatory, is part of Binational Cooperation Program between Haiti and the Dominican Republic funded by the European Union.
