Haiti - Diaspora Chicago : «Evening of Unity» 11/01/2016 08:39:52 "Distinguished members of the participating organizations, Distinguished members of the Community, Dear compatriots, Friends of Haiti, Frè m ak sè m yo, Ladies and gentlemen, The year 2016 is here. Together again, we are greeting a brand new year. 2015 with all its challenges and accomplishments, is indeed behind us. For me, this Unity Event in which we are taking part today has become a pleasant date which allows me to share the company of proud compatriots and true friends of Haiti. As always, I bring brotherly greetings from the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago. This time again, the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago appreciates the role played by many community organizations in the preparation of this patriotic event. This kind of collaboration has made 'Unity' the main characteristic of this endeavor, and shows us an excellent way to go about this year and those that will follow. As for our compatriots in Haiti, this is the time when they must be intelligent and pragmatic in their choices and actions. In two weeks, they will be called upon to participate, through their votes, in a crucial phase of the democratic process. Back home, at the start of every year, simple and sincere good wishes serve to strengthen friendships and family ties. In that same spirit, I wish you all a fruitful year 2016 with much love, peace and security. Though the month of January is of double importance to us, now it brings back the difficult images of that unmerciful January 12, 2010 earthquake. Let us have a thought for those whose lives will never be the same, and those who desperately need our solidarity. Let us also think of those our community lost in 2015; especially Reverend Pastor Joseph Dieudonné and Roméo Étienne. Our country is now 212 years old. There are those who say that we have nothing to celebrate because since 1804, Haiti has had nothing but hard times, and made so many concessions. On the contrary, we must cherish this glorious past which is ours, and cannot be taken away from us by anything in the world. With their bravery, pragmatism and determination, our ancestors defeated slavery, and created the New World’s first black State. However, isolated in a clearly hostile and profoundly dishonest world, this minuscule fish swimming among sharks, has managed to survive without self-destructing like some had predicted it would. Yes, we must celebrate our history, find inspiration in our ancestor’s courage. Like them, we must learn to rely, first and foremost, on ourselves. In closing, I must, once again, congratulate all the community organizations that collaborated with the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago for this event of Unity and Remembrance. An event that promotes unity is the best way to celebrate our independence since that independence is the result of an examplary unity. Let us always be proud of our heritage ! Lesly Condé, Consul General."
