Haiti - Economy : The cost of the food basket increased by 16% over one year 09/05/2016 11:06:05
Inflationary trends, particularly of food products, continue to threaten the stability and improvement of food security conditions in Haiti, especially for the most vulnerable segments of the population. In the first quarter 2016, the average monthly increase of products (local and imported) of the food basket was 2% on average.
The situation is much more clear in yoy between the first quarter of 2015 and that of 2016, the increase was almost 16%. From a monthly average of approximately 900 gourdes (4,500 for a family of 5) in the first quarter 2015, the cost of the food basket has increased to 1054.6 gourdes (5,273 gourdes for a family of 5) between the two periods.
Economic indicators in the red, the depreciation of the national currency, the lack of investment and massive job creation and the continuing socio-political crisis, largely responsible for the situation, do not suggest in the short term significant improvement in the cost of living in Haiti.
