Haiti - Politic : Message to the Nation of Jocelerme Privert
As part of the commemoration of the 210th anniversary of the assassination, on 17 October 1806 in Pont-Rouge of the Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Jacques 1), Founding Father of the Nation, the de facto President Jocelerme Privert sent a message to the population, which we reproduce verbatim.

Message of Jocelerme Privert :
"In this October 17 2016, the commemoration of the death of Emperor Jean-Jacques Dessalines brings us to the memory of one of the darkest days of our history, at the same time it imposes on us a break of reflection and meditation on the events of our present and the misadventures of our destiny of free and independent people.

210 years ago, in fact, the Founding Father of the Fatherland was sacrificed by impious hands on the altar of his passion for freedom and equality, and independence gained on the battlefield, at the price of a heroism that has no parallel in the whole world history. The flame of social justice that he wanted to walk around and implementing on the remains of structures and prejudices of the colonial era has died at Pont Rouge, in the ignominy of a parricide that we do not perhaps have finished expiate.

Because history remains an instrument of identification and unity, we collect piously in this day to honor the memory of an unrivaled revolutionary, the memory of a martyr to the cause of the Haitian masses, enamored of freedom, equality and prosperity. The man carried within him the grandiose dream to see the land of Haiti belong, without exception, to all those who had risked their lives to free from the yoke of slavery and colonialism. For him, the abolition of the explotation system inevitably entailed the elimination of prejudices of color and the social and economic barriers that can hinder community life and lourishing of all the girls and all the son of the young Nation.

This self-sacrifice and overcoming spirit that animated this great visionary of Santo Domingo elevate him at the highest peak of fame, in the immortal gallery of builders of nations and civilizations. He offers to our present and future generations the example and lesson of a battle to be fought every day, in a belief that has its roots and its faith in the unity that constitutes the strength and makes the people invincible.

Our Founder taught us patriotic fervor and the Union, enshrined in the facts by his unlikely alliance with General Alexandre Pétion. By this gesture, he had accomplished the founding act and generated the unbeatable coalition that would lead our ancestors on the peaks of Vertières and to the radiant eve of January 1, 1804.

Premye chèf Leta peyi a te kwè tout bon nou pa ta kapab gen yon nasyon si ansyen ak nouvo lib yo pat mete tèt ansanm. Entèlijans li te pèmèt li dekouvri ké tou 2 gwoup sa yo, an reyalite t’ap rapousib yon menm rèv: TOUT MOUN DWE VIV EGAL EGO.

Dear Compatriots,

Today more than ever, the example of Jean-Jacques Dessalines must be a lesson and galvanize our energies to face the harsh realities we face today. Our country is living the anguish of extremely difficult times, following the passage of the hurricane Matthew that devastated five of the ten departments of the country and caused significant pain and loss of life, in material and environmental damage.

In these times of trial and tribulation, the memory and ideals of the Father of the Nation should serve as a catalyst and ferment for the realization of this national reconciliation so necessary for the recovery of our country. That they know inspire us the behavior consistent with our pursuit of quest for patriotic concord and the institution of psychological and moral conditions, conducive to sacrifice of selfish interests and engaging the entire nation in the pursuit of a common project of collective welfare.

In the conjuncture of the hurricane Matthew and with the approach of presidential and legislative elections, I invite you, under the wings tutelary of genius of the Father of the nation, to turn the pages of a history too often marked by division to open of a determined and sincere hand the door of a future of peace and unity."
