Haiti - Diaspora : Message of Consul of Chicago
Sunday, Lesly Condé, the Consul General of Haiti in Chicago in a speech at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace (Chicago), paid tribute to the memory of all our disappeared compatriots, victims of Hurricane Matthew in addition to commemorate the 210th anniversary of the assassination of Jean-Jacques Dessalines.

Message from Consul Lesly Condé :

"Distinguished members of the Congregation,
Dear visitors and friends of Haiti,
Dear compatriots,
Friends of Haiti,
My brothers and sisters,
Ladies and gentlemen,

This year, our traditional meeting in the house of the Lord takes a particularly somber tone. Besides commemorating the two hundred and tenth (210th) anniversary of Dessalines's assassination, we are here to pay homage to the memory of all our brothers and sisters who have been taken away from us by hurricane Matthew. We also want to express our unshakable solidarity toward all our compatriots, and dedicate our most fervent prayers to them. For you all, I bring brotherly greetings from the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago.

First and foremost, I must, once again, thank the Haitian Catholic Mission of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Church of Our Lady of Peace for always walking with our Community.

At this precise moment when we are gathered to pray for our devastated country, thousands of our compatriots of all ages are facing unimaginably difficult conditions. It is absolutely indispensable that we make concrete gestures of solidarity that will go along with our prayers. I know that you are ready and willing to lend a hand to our brothers and sisters in need, one way or another. Considering the extent of the tragedy, and the short time and long-time consequences it will have on the physical and mental health of the affected communities, let us ask the Lord to grant us wisdom, endurance and a lot of generosity as we need to accompany our nation through the generations.

This is how devastated we are as we commemorate the 210th anniversary of Jean-Jacques Dessalines' assassination. Just like hurricane Matthew that came six years after an unforgiving earthquake whose wounds are far from being healed, Emperor Dessalines' death put an abrupt end to the legitimate hopes of the masses that fought so bravely. However, if we concentrate on Jean-Jacques Dessalines' life, we can find a strong example of courage, pragmatism and determination. We can do justice to our nation's Father by working hard to achieve the triumph of his great vision.

As our compatriots are preparing to go to the polls in order to, democratically, decide the future of our country, let us ask God to enlighten them so that their actions and their decisions may lead us to a future that matches Jean-Jacques Dessalines' vision.

In closing, let me thank you from the bottom of my heart for being here to commemorate such an important date in our history. I also thank you in advance for your gestures of solidarity toward our brothers and sisters back home. I like your solidarity. I encourage it because it is durable, genuine, legitimate and, most importantly, it is honest. Always keep Haiti in mind, and remain proud of your identity.

Thank you !

Lesly Condé
Consul General"
