Haiti - Education : Preschool curriculum, a first in the Haitian education system
As part of the pilot project of implementation of Curriculum for preschool, financed by the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB), the Office of Pre-school Education Management (BUGEP) organized a series of exploratory missions in the departments of the Center, the North East and the North to prepare the Curriculum pilot experiment in one of these departments.

Stressing the need to rethink early childhood in the educational system, Marie Yolaine Vandal, Director of BUGEP, stresses that this ministry's approach is essentially aimed at improving the quality of pre-school education as defined in the policy document "Integral Development of Early Childhood" (DIPE), approved by the Ministry in 2012.

This curriculum for pre-school education, which is a first in the Haitian education system, is part of efforts to modernize the tools available to those working in the field of preschool education in Haiti.

In the north, a dozen schools were visited out of a total of 38 that counts the commune of Milot, for the purpose of evaluating their structures, their system of organization, the respect of the movable standards for the little one and the profile of the teachers.

Meetings were organized with the principals of the commune and more than 300 parents of preschool children, most of whom were satisfied and in favor of the implementation of this Curriculum. This enabled to exchange with the key players in the system aound the merits of the Curriculum for pre-school education.

For the executives of the ministry, without better preparation of children in pre-school, the school's future may be compromised. "Since preschool is the basis of children's school learning, it should be taken very seriously," said Milot's senior inspector, Yves Espérant.
