Haiti - Social : Tributes and condolences to Herby Widmaïer
Herby Widmaïer died Thursday morning at his private residence, at the age of 84 years. Founder of Radio Métropole in March 1970, with the help of his wife Micheline Widmaïer, Roland Dupoux and Bob Lemoine, Herby Widmaïer was a legendary figure of radio in Haiti "With him the country lost one of its great sons."

President Jovenel Moïse :
"The President of the Republic, Jovenel Moses, learned with sadness the news of the death, of Herby Widmaïer, an emblematic figure of the broadcasting and the music in Haiti.

On behalf of the Haitian people and in his own name, the Head of State conveys his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late deceased, his relatives and the staff of Radio Métropole in general."

Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant :
"Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant has learned with deep sadness the passing of Herby Widmaïer [...] The Prime Minister wishes to salute in Herby Widmaïer an unavoidable figure of Haitian music, an amateur and jazz animator whose music will always bear indelible traces. This great singer and excellent pianist will have profoundly influenced generations of Haitian musicians [...] With him, the country has lost one of its great sons.

On behalf of the government, the Prime Minister takes this opportunity to extend his sincere condolences to his family, his many friends and to all the dynamic radio and television Métropole team."

Minister of Culture, Limond Toussaint :
Limond Toussaint, the Minister of Culture and Communication, "salute the departure for the East of this legendary figure of radio and music" and is "pained by his death".

"Minister Toussaint thanks this valiant media man who in the 1970s helped revolutionize broadcasting in Haiti by founding Radio Métropole, now Radio Télé Métropole, one of the undisputed drivers of the promotion of culture and witness of highlights of the history of Haitian society.

His contribution to the enhancement of art, to the expansion of Culture, to the immortality of cultural and artistic works will have made him a particularly remarkable man and a legendary figure in the collective memory [...] Herby Widmaier Il was not only a media man but was also a singer of the Orchestra of 'Issa El Saieh' and created the vocal group 'Les Starlettes' (1957). Arnold Antonin devoted his a documentary 'Herby, le jazz et la musique haïtienne'.

In these difficult times, the MCC conveys its deepest sympathies to the Widmaïer family, the staff of Radio Télé and the Haitian culture and communication sector, who are struck by this disappearance."
