Haiti - Economy : The Haitian Government expects a lot from ECOSOC
Tuesday, at the National Palace, President Jovenel Moïse, was visited by a delegation from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), who arrived in Haiti yesterday and who is leading a mission to Haiti until 10 May to assess the socio-economic situation and to draw up its next recommendations on the long-term development of Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20871-haiti-economy-important-mission-of-the-ecosoc-in-haiti.html The working meeting was attended by, among others, the Prime Minister, Jack Guy Lafontant, various government ministers and Sandra Honoré the Representative of the UN Secretary General, followed by a joint press conference between Hervé Denis, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada, Marc André Blanchard Head of Delegation and Chairman of the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti.

"ECOSOC's visit to Haiti demonstrates an enthusiastic commitment by the international community to the development of Haiti," said André Blanchard, who highlighted the quality of the discussions and the hope inspired by the new Moïse-Lafontant administration. While welcoming the Head of State's agenda, which he says is aligned with that of the UN in agricultural development, the vitality of democratic institutions, advocacy for the environment and education, He affirmed the Group's determination to contribute to the economic and social reconstruction of Haiti.

Let's recall that the ECOSOC delegation composed of ambassadors and representatives from 15 countries has a mandate to advocate with the international community to encourage development assistance for the sustainable development of Haiti and to ensure that this assistance is sufficient, coherent and well used.

"His goal is to get money from donors for the full success of government programs," Hervé Denis added, "The Advisory Group can help develop a renewed partnership framework that will enable Haiti to catch up with its delays, substantially increase domestic production, develop essential public infrastructure, increase its capacity to attract foreign investment, and provide the Haitian population with new prospects for investment, improvement of its living conditions by 2030."

The Government of Haiti has many expectations, including :

  • ECOSOC's support for the Caravan of Change, launched on 1 May 2017 ;
  • The support of the institution for projects to revive agriculture and rehabilitate the environment ;
  • The support of the United Nations system in the framework of the organization of the Sectoral General Assembly, whose will result the national roadmap for the implementation of the reforms deemed essential ;
  • A support that can help increase official development assistance and improve its effectiveness ;
  • The increased substantive support of the international community within the framework of the priorities and programs defined by the Haitian Government with regard to the Sustainable Development Objectives (SDO).
