Haiti - Politics : Installation of the National Health Reform Commission
On Monday at the National Palace, President Jovenel Moïse, in the presence of the Prime Minister, Jack Guy Lafontant, Marie Greta Roy Clément, the Minister of Public Health and members of international organizations involved in the health sector in Haiti, proceeded to the installation of the members of the National Committee for the Reform of the Health System and Hospital Care.

The Head of State spoke about the reasons that led to the creation of this Commission, whose mandate is to study and recommend all measures likely to facilitate the reform of health and hospital services in Haiti and explained "The situation is marked by a global deficiency in the management of our services, disillusioned staff and repeated strikes in our hospitals. All this contributes to demotivation of staff, absenteeism, deterioration in the quality of care and under-funding of the sector. Such a picture, which is not exhaustive, explains the poor performance of the health system and its overall inefficiency despite significant investments in infrastructure in recent years."

According to Moïse, this Commission must make it possible to come up with concrete proposals that will enable the State to have pragmatic and feasible solutions that will satisfy the right to health of the population "All the population must benefit from the services that respond to its needs and not in function of its pocket. It will be required that this reform also puts the users of our services outside the spectrum of ruinous healthcare spending. We expect all citizens to find services and health care wherever they are," concluded Moïse, who believes that the measures to be taken should include health financing, hospital management, the establishment of the health model and universal health coverage.

For her part, Yolène Suréna, the President of the Commission, while outlining some of the ways in which the Commission works, gave the guarantee that the Commission will work to "provide the country with an evolving, balanced health system where preventive and the curative cohabitates and through which each Haitian will have access to essential services of quality."

The Commission is composed of Yolène Suréna (President) and 10 members : Gérard Abel, Lucille Charles, Ronald Laroche, Gérard Blot, Gardner Michel, Carl François, Ewald Jeune Joseph, Marc-Henry Pierre-François, Roseta Georges Alisma and Fils-Lien Thélot.
