Haiti - Politics : Commemoration of the death of «Capois La Mort»
Thursday 19 October in Port-de-Paix, Limond Toussaint, the Minister of Culture represented Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant (unavailable due to a conflict of agenda) at the Commemoration of the Assassination ceremony, in the zone of Limonade (North), of General François Capois aka "Capois La Mort".

This ceremony was attended by the President of the National Assembly, Senator Yuri Latortue, accompanied by eight of his colleagues, Pierre J. Agénor Cadet, the Minister of National Education, was aimed at restoring the prowess of General Capois La Mort, the hero of the War of Independence of Haiti.

After a floral offering laid at the feet of the hero of the War of Independence, the Delegation went to the Town Square to deliver the messages of circumstance.

In his speech, Minister Limond Toussaint declared "[...] On behalf of the Prime Minister, and in my own name, I welcome this event which has a very special meaning. It is really of the utmost importance to commemorate the heroes of independence, those Negroes who came from Africa, who fought, at the price of sacrifices, at the price of blood, the most powerful Napoleonic army at the time, to make Haiti, since 1804, the first independent Black Republic of the world, the Mother of Liberty on a planetary scale."

"[...] This event, of great historical value, remains a source of pride, but of deep meditation and orientation, not only for Haitians, but also for black people around the world," continued Minister Toussaint, who believes that besides Toussaint Louverture, the Genius, of Jean Jacques Dessalines, the Father Founder of the Homeland, Henri Christophe, the Great Builder, General Capois La Mort remains, certainly, an emblematic figure of the history of Haiti. The historical lesson to remember, in this circumstance is that "The union of the blacks and the mulattoes made it possible to take up a major challenge: the independence of Haiti in 1804 [...] Today, the social and economic revolution that the Moïse / Lafontant Government is strongly and enthusiastically supporting remains possible, if we can come together, Brothers and Sisters, to combine our efforts and channel our energies towards a goal common."

Historical background :
On October 19, 1806, on the eve of the assassination of Dessalines, Henri Christophe, who feared more than ever General Francois Capois and saw in him a probable political rival after the expected death of the emperor, thought the opportune moment to make it disappear. Capois was on his way to Cap-Haitien, when, at the height of the village of Limonade, he perceived on his way the generals Romain and Dartiguenave, as well as the adjutant-general Gerard. Happy at the meeting, the hero of Vertiers wished to salute General Romain by extending his hand amiably. It was at this moment that Adjutant-General Gerard took possession of his saber. Francois Capois understood that he had just fallen into a trap, and, according to the historian Thomas Madiou, he offered no resistance to his enemies, but rather declared to General Romain, Your master Christophe is very happy with me, to have taken in this trap; because, soon I would have made him feel the strength of my arm; let's finish it fast." Always according to Madiou: he placed himself five paces from a platoon and was killed.
