Haiti - Environment : The Minister Pierre Simon Georges in Kenya
At the 3rd United Nations Environment Assembly held in Nairobi, Kenya (East Africa) from 4 to 8 December, Pierre Simon Georges, the Minister of the Environment represented Haiti alongside delegates and ministers of the environment around the world, come to discuss the best solutions to Combat Pollution.

On the sidelines of this meeting, the Minister Georges met among others with the Director and Representative of the UN Environment Program (UNEP) for the region of Latin America and the Caribbean.

In his address at the podium, Minister Georges recalled the commitments already made in Haiti by the Government Moïse to fight against pollution and pleaded for "the small countries victims of pollution like Haiti to be strongly assisted in the repair of the environment."

Excerpts from the statement of the Minister of the Environment, Pierre Simon Georges :

"[...] I have the honor to speak at this 3rd United Nations Environment Assembly on behalf of the Government of Haiti. 'A Pollution-Free World' has been chosen as a theme to catalyze a tangible number of commitments to fight pollution [...] Approximately 3 million people die each year from pollution [...]

[...] We know that pollution-related morbidity and mortality are preventable and we are here to make decisions to say no to pollution. Taking into account the impacts of pollution on human health and ecosystems, the Government of Haiti is engaged, under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Haiti, His Excellency Jovenel Moïse, to fight against pollution in all its forms for this purpose several activities have been carried out :

  • The inauguration of the first Germplasm Center, last Saturday with an annual production capacity 4.5 million forest and fruit species https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-22875-icihaiti-environment-inauguration-of-the-plant-propagation-center-south.html Three others are already under construction and six more are planned for the year 2018. This will make it possible to work resolutely and irreversibly on the reforestation of the country. ;
  • The fight to eradicate the cholera epidemic through a vast project to capture and purify water sources ;
  • Conducting a survey on the management of hazardous chemical waste in four major cities of the country ;
  • The signing of an Interministerial Memorandum of Understanding for the Promotion of Hygiene, Sanitation and Living Environment ;
  • Strengthening waste legislation by adopting the law establishing the National Service for the Management of Solid Waste. This law is published on September 21, 2017 ;
  • The triggering of the accession and / or ratification process to the Cartagena, Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm and Minamata Conventions ;
  • The publication of a Presidential Order elevating the National Agency of Protected Areas to the rank of Autonomous Directorate, which has enabled the creation of a network of 25 protected areas, including 11 marine areas.

All these actions are aimed at combating pollution in order to create a healthy and pleasant living environment.

However, Mr. President, much remains to be done to significantly reduce the impact of pollution on human health and the environment in Haiti. Waste management is a major concern for the Government of Haiti.

It is on the basis of these considerations, that the Government of Haiti takes advantage of this forum to ask, that countries victims of pollution like Haiti already too vulnerable by the climatic changes, are strongly assisted in the repair of the environment [...]"
