Haiti - Diaspora : Project of «agricultural villages in border areas»
Yesterday Wednesday, Stéphanie Auguste the acting Minister of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) and Hervil Chérubin, Country Director of the NGO Heifer International in Haiti signed a protocol of cooperation around a project of establishment of agricultural villages in border areas, in the presence of Yolette Mengual, Director General of the Ministry and mayors of the communes concerned.

This agreement stipulates that "the purpose of this protocol is to establish lasting cooperation between the MHAVE and Heifer-Haiti with a view to encouraging Haitians living abroad to make the best contribution to the development of their region of origin through boosting local economic life [...] The objectives of this cooperation protocol are to encourage nad to incite Haitians living abroad to invest and transfer their skills in the agricultural value chain in Haiti to help create jobs in rural areas, reduce the import of commodities that Haiti has the capacity to produce, reduce the rural exodus of young people, promote quality products that can penetrate the ethnic markets in the host countries, etc..."

In her remarks of circumstance, the Minister Auguste underlined that this protocol is signed with a view to create three agricultural villages respectively in the communes of Ouanaminthe, Anse-à-Pitres and Belladères.

Specifically, this initiative will make it possible to valorize the lands of the frontier communes which are not exploited and to come to the aid of the populations of these border zones of which some live below the threshold of poverty.

Minister Auguste hopes that this protocol will lead to job creation, agricultural and economic development, and contribute to the reduction of rural-urban migration, a challenge that the Ministry intends to meet by joining the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development. and of Environment.

For his part the Director of Heifer-Haiti, gave the guarantee that his organization would accompany the MHAVE in the implementation of these agricultural projects.
