Haiti - Politic : Official wishes of President Jovenel Moïse
At this end of the year, President Jovenel Moïse at the official greeting ceremony presented his wishes to the population for the new year 2018.

Wishes of President Jovenel :
"Since the day of my installation at the head of the State on February 7th, I pledged myself to work, relentlessly and without reserve, to the recovery of the State. I knew that I was going to face a lot of difficulties.

Today, more than 10 months later, I feel reinforced in my convictions that more must be done to ensure that this valiant and courageous Haitian people can at last have a better future.

The resilience and combativeness of the Haitian people remain my main source of inspiration for transforming the state and truly putting it at the service of the population by taking measures to :

  • Improve its living conditions ;
  • To preserve the environment ;
  • Diversify and increase national production ;
  • Fight against corruption ;
  • Reduce inequalities of all kinds.

I therefore pay a well deserved tribute to the Haitian people for the confidence he has kindly placed in me.

It is also a time to express my thanks to my family for having understood the meaning of my commitment to the Haitian people and for their unwavering support.

In the same way, to all my collaborators, from near and far, I recognize your much needed contribution during the first 10 months of my mandate. I greet all those who have recognized in me the qualities of a servant of the Haitian people, those who started and maintained this journey with me, as well as those I met along the way.

Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the diplomatic corps,

I want, in the new year, to strengthen the rapprochement I started with you. An active, frank and sincere partnership focused on national priorities is, without doubt, one of the best, if not the most important, path leading to the strengthening of bilateral relations and to this necessary communion of ideas and actions to face the many global challenges, such as climate change.

With regard to resilience to the effects of climate change, Haiti holds the rotating presidency of the Caribbean Community on January 1, 2018. At the One Planet summit on financing climate action, which I led the Haitian delegation, in Paris on December 12, the conclusion was reached that the countries of the Caribbean, particularly the CARICOM members, are victims of a phenomenon caused by emissions of greenhouse gases which they hardly contribute.

The wish of the Haitian government is to strengthen hurricane insurance mechanisms, while providing a common front for adaptation and mitigation efforts at the level of regional island countries.

With regard to official development assistance, I reiterate my readiness and that of the Government to continue to work with you in the spirit of solidarity that drives international cooperation. My administration is open to collaboration with all partners, indistinctly, according to the deep aspirations of the Haitian people and according to the priorities identified by the government.

My sincerest wish, in connection with Haiti's external relations, is that, drawing the necessary lessons from the experiences of the last thirty or forty years, we will continue the path of effective collaboration that my administration has begun during the past ten months.

Together, in 2018, we will continue to correct and innovate in the methods and practices of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, so that the social, economic and political development of Haiti ceases to be wishful thinking, a declamation to make politically correct and become a lived reality, experienced by every citizen.

It is also the vision that drives the Caravan of Change. I invite you to visit the field to see the recovery efforts underway in Haiti in the context of the Caravan.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Haitian people,

With regard to the national outlook for 2018, a number of challenges await us, of course. However, we will redouble our efforts to strengthen the ongoing political dialogue. Because I believe and I insist that the proper functioning of the state requires a constant exercise of listening and understanding. Some fellow citizens do not share the same political orientations as I do. Beyond our differences, we join in our shared desire and our shared will to profoundly change our country.

I want to reassure all my compatriots, opponents, supporters, young, old, workmen, craftsmen, entrepreneurs, students, teachers, laymen, religious, all Haitians indiscriminately, that the door of true and constructive dialogue remains open so that, with mutual respect , we can weave together the necessary understanding for political and social stability in the best interest of the nation and for the good of our dear Haiti.

This year, the consolidation of stability characterized by the departure of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) offers an opportunity to strengthen the country's governance. For the maintenance of this stability, I express the wish that the powers of the State will spare no sacrifice for the consolidation of democracy.

In this sense, I invite the political parties, the civil society, the private business sector, in short, all the forces of the Nation to work tirelessly in 2018, to maintain the momentum of the dialogue initiated this year, to :

  • Lead to the success of sectoral States General of the Nation ;
  • Establish the Permanent Electoral Council ;
  • Complete the Court of Cassation ;
  • To set up the Constitutional Council ;
  • Strengthen the judicial system.

Article 136 of the Constitution enshrines in the presidential institution the continuity of the State and the crucible, par excellence, of national unity. In my capacity as President of the Republic and Head of State, I will not cease for a moment to fulfill this noble mission.

My political vision, to which the Haitian people, who has mandated me, commits me to the major projects that should lead to the economic and social recovery of the country. Among my best wishes are the continuation of efforts to :

  • Build the national electricity grid ;
  • Gradually convert the country to Green Energy ;
  • Protect our watersheds;
  • Modernize and finance agriculture ;
  • Review our social security policy ;
  • Strengthen vocational education ;
  • Control and ensure the management of surface water ;
  • Gradually fill the 12,000 classroom shortage and improve the quality of education ;
  • Improve the business climate and attract direct investment ; and
  • Transforming Public Administration.

All of these policies help to restore young people's confidence in their future, in their country.

Haitian people,

Ladies and gentlemen,

May the year 2018 bring us all the wisdom and strengthen our civic and patriotic spirit, which is more than ever necessary, to overcome our differences for the collective well-being and progress of our dear Haiti.

Thank you."

Jovenel Moïse, President of the Republic of Haiti
