Haiti - Religion : Christmas message of bishops of the Catholic Church of Haiti
The bishops of the Catholic Church of Haiti (CEH), meeting in Ordinary Plenary Assembly at the headquarters of Lilavois sent their traditional Christmas message to priests, religious, faithful lay and men and women of good will whom we invite you to share excerpts.

Excerpts from the Christmas message of the Bishops of the Catholic Church of Haiti :

"[...] As we prepare to celebrate this feast of the Light, we live in particularly dark events in our history. We observe with great sorrow and anxiety the growing phenomenon of mass migration of Haitians and especially young people to Latin America (Chile and Brazil), the Caribbean and North America (Canada and USA). This migratory flow deprives Haiti of a significant part of its youth, its executives. It is the very future of the country that is threatened. The young people of Haiti are struggling to hope, to build their future in a country that, in their opinion, offers them no chance, no prospect for the future [...]

There is also and above all the shameless corruption that is spreading at all levels of society and becoming rampant. Indeed, corruption, 'without respect for the borders, concerns people, public and private structures of power and the ruling classes'. This is a situation that 'promotes impunity and the illicit accumulation of wealth, lack of trust in political institutions, especially in the administration of justice and public investment, which are not always transparent, neither equal for all, nor effective' (John Paul II, The Church in America, 1999, n.62). The plague of corruption must be denounced and fought with force by those who hold the authority and with 'the generous support of all citizens, animated by a strong moral conscience' (John Paul II, Message for the World Day of Peace of 1998).

Certainly, some people fructify honestly their credit. But unfortunately many others enrich themselves with impunity, fraudulently to the detriment of the impoverished population. With impunity, the perpetrators of evil are tolerated, even protected by those who should chastise them and bring them back on track.

[...] We urge the holders of the three powers of the state to take firm measures and concerted decisions to create conditions conducive to job creation, state stability and security of the nation. We urge the elites of different sectors (economic, political, professional) and politicians to invest and invest more in the consolidation of institutions, respect for democratic rules and development of the country.

We urge the Haitians from here and our compatriots in the diaspora to feel themselves challenged by such a dramatic situation and become aware of their civic responsibility towards the Haitian nation to build together and on values, such as : living together of people and the vocation to develop it; the pursuit of the common good, which is at once the good of all and the good of everyone; respect for human dignity, honesty and civility.

We are preparing to celebrate Christmas, the feast of Love, Solidarity, Sharing, Fraternity, Communion in the Son of God who has incarnated. It is a time of grace that we, Haitians, are called to welcome and live in unity, forgiveness, reconciliation. Haitians, let us hold ourselves sincerely and solidly by the hand, and say: No to the division which weakens us and destroys our Nation ! Yes to the union that is strength ! Let us put together our intelligence, our talents, our resources, our wealth, at the service of building a solid rule of law, a democratic and prosperous nation, a Haiti that looks with confidence at its future to live fully and with hope its present. On this time of Advent, time of hope and active waiting in prayer and action, let us turn, together, with our eyes wide open, towards the salvation that God offers us in Jesus, the Messiah, the long-awaited Savior...

We wish you all: a Merry Christmas 2017 and a Happy New Year 2018 in the hope of the Lord who turns evil into good, death into life and changes darkness into Light !"
