Haiti - Politic : «Our enemy today is ourselves» dixit Jovenel Moïse
Monday, January 1, 2018, President Jovenel Moïse, accompanied by his wife Martine and Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant, commemorated in Gonaïves, the 214 years of Haiti's independence in the presence of many state authorities, ministers, Directors General and Parliamentarians, the Presidents of the National Assembly and of the Lower House, respectively the Honorable Youri Latortue and Cholzer Chancy, the President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, Me Jules Cantave, the Acting Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Haiti, former FADH colonel Jodel Lesage; the Director General of the Haitian National Police Michel-Ange Gédéon, representatives of civil society, clergy and various diplomatic and consular missions in Haiti, including the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent.

The commemoration ceremony was organized in four great moments: the laying of a wreath at the foot of the monuments on the Gonaïves' Place d'armes, the Te Deum at the Cathedral of Remembrance, the traditional parade in honor of Heroes of independence, composed of the Armed Forces of Haiti (FADH), agents of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), the national fanfare and finally the large patriotic gathering where several personalities intervened before the speech of President Jovenel Moïse.

Extracts from the message of President Jovenel Moïse :

"[...]

here in Gonaïves, one day like today in 1804 where we are today on the Place d'Armes in the cities of Gonaïves our ancestors [...] corrected this balance [slavery], they founded Haiti .

[...] the story of Haiti shows us clearly that when the people believe in an idea and that they commit themselves to fight for it, there is no sacrifice that they will not do to achieve it, nothing can stop it [...]

It is when we improve our heritage to transmit it to our children, in good conditions that we can say that the country is truly independent, we have made political independence that is very good, today we are a nation, today we are a people but the great battles of the economic independence, it is for this one that we must unite [...] this idea of independence it is an idea that we must enter into our heads to pull the country out of its current situation.

[...]

From 1804 to today, 214 years [...] we have to wonder about what we did with the heritage of our ancestors, what we did with the country, what we decided to do with it. Have we gained confidence of where are we ? Where do we want to go ? [...] The children of 1804 must not be afraid of the truth. I say it in truth where the Nation is today, it can not stay there, where we are today does not resemble us, it is not our place, where we are that's not what Toussaint Louverture, Jean Jacques Dessalines, Henry Christophe, Alexandre Petion, Capois LaMort, Capois... wanted for the country, that's not why they sacrificed their heads.

The dream has been stuck for too long, conflicts, jealousy, division we can not continue with that.

Life has slept too long in the crossroads of danger, misery, corruption, division, corruption, insecurity have been present for too long in society.

Our enemy today is ourselves, he is among us, he is in our heart, it is because often we do not want to respect the rules of the game, it is because often we do not want to respect our brothers and sisters on our side, it is because often we do not want to respect as the other thinks, it is because often we do not want to respect the law.

The legacy is threatened, what have we decided to do with the country? Are we ready for the new challenges? Are we determined to make our country, the economy of our country to emerge? [...]"
