Haiti - Diaspora : Message of the Consul Lesly Condé in the Church Our Lady of Peace
Monday, January 1, 2018, at the Church of Our Lady of Peace (Chicago) as part of the commemoration of the 214th anniversary of Haiti's independence, Lesly Condé, the Consul General of Haiti in Chicago delivered a message to the community come in large numbers attended a solemn mass.

Message from Consul Condé :

"[...]
On this very first day of the year 2018, I am very proud to join you in the Lord's house so that we can welcome the New Year together, and thank the Almighty for having walked with us this far. We are also here to commemorate the two hundred and fourteenth anniversary of our country's independence. As always, I bring warm greetings from the Consulate General of Haiti in Chicago.

Just like every time, I must thank the Church of Our Lady of Peace as well as the Haitian Catholic Mission of the Archdiocese of Chicago on behalf of the Chicago Haitian Community for their undying solidarity. Thanks to that solidarity, we can quietly welcome the New Year while proudly celebrating our identity.

I am truly pleased to begin the year in your company. Your contagious enthusiasm is a welcome sign of a pleasant future. At this time, I want to wish you all a year full of happiness, love and success.

The first day of every year has a double significance for every Haitian. We must thank the Lord for having guided and preserved us to this day. On this first day of January 2018, we are commemorating the 214th anniversary of an event that changed the world. I know that those who benefited enormously from slavery do not share our opinion. In fact, our tumultuous history shows that this world has never stopped throwing all kinds of obstacles in the path of the world's First Black Republic. This is the same world that purports to be so in love with the ideals of freedom and justice. When we consider what we have done or what we have not done with our country for the past 214 years, we certainly must not blame it on an innate ineptitude. This is exactly what our detractors of yesterday and today hold as their best argument.

When we commemorate the anniversary of Haiti's independence, we celebrate the courage and determination of our ancestors; those brave men and women who defied the existing world order, faced and defeated Europe's most feared soldiers. They did it on behalf of human dignity and freedom. Today, we still have a lot to learn from the example of Jean-Jacques Dessalines and the brave men and women who fought by his side. Such an exploit would not have been possible without complete unity and utter disregard for personal considerations. This is, today more than ever, our greatest challenge on behalf of our homeland and the future.

In closing, I thank you all for being here. I also wish you much success in all your endeavors during 2018. Whatever you do, please remember Haiti."

Recall that Saturday, January 6, the Haitian Congress to Fortify Haiti, the Consular Mission and other local organizations invite all compatriots to a large community gathering to be held from 5:00 pm at the Family Focus 2010 Dewey, Evanston (Illinois).

On the program: message from the Consul General and other speakers, songs, poems, musical entertainment etc... The traditional soup with giraumon will be served and a memory of our dear Haiti given to all those present. We will take this opportunity to honor the memory of the victims of the 2010 earthquake.
