Haiti - Environment : 250 university students volunteer
On Friday, Pierre Simon Georges, the Minister of the Environment through the Climate Change Department and the South-East Departmental Directorate, officially launched the national "Volunteer for Climate" program aimed at developing eco-civism among Haitian families, through the participation of young people from the department including students from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FSA) of the Public University of South-East in Jacmel (UPSEJ).

Minister George, who opened the ceremony, applauded the 250 student volunteers for their commitment to this vast environmental education campaign at a time when many young people are fleeing the country in search of a better life and is being moved about their determination. He reiterated the willingness of his Ministry to work alongside these motivated youth, committed and ready to go to the communal sections to educate and train the population.

For Agronomist Arsene Bastien, Departmental Director for the South East, this partnership between the Ministry and young Southeast academics should serve as a model for the rest of the country. He solicits the support of the Ministry of the Interior through the Boards of Communal Sections (CASEC), and the Administration of Communal Sections (ASEC) to ensure the safety of these volunteers in the field. Noting that these volunteer students, who will be deployed in teams of 5 per communal section, will start with awareness work during the rainy season (May 1 to June 30) in order to equip the Department with 50 woodlots (forest trees) and 50 orchards (fruit trees). GPS (Global Positioning System) will be used for Geo-localization of spaces chosen by local authorities.

For Nelson Royal, vice-delegate of the South-East, while welcoming the gesture of these young students who put their passion and their youth for the benefit of the country believes "Si nou pa parèt, nap disparèt" convinced that the question of the environment is not only a national matter but rather international. That is why he urges ministries, organizations and bodies working in the field of the environment to seek the true formula to attack this problem both upstream and downstream.

"The will and the commitment of the young people constitute the pivot of this program of the Ministry of the Environment," affirmed Jean Elie Gilles Rector of the Public University South-East adding "The university education, aims to train cultivated humans and enlightened, people capable of contributing to the social, cultural, economic and political development of society. Also, this act of the students testifies of their desire to answer their mission, that to take care of the Nation, to make it live and revive. However, it will require good support from the State."
